Kendall entered his car and drove to the pet store, slightly annoyed. The father goldfish couldn't even enjoy two minutes at home before he was forced to leave again. Fortunately, the pet store was a relatively short distance away.
On the way, he drove past several of his fellow fishkind, who were either driving their cars or walking on the sidewalk. Days prior, they were all mindless beings living in ponds, fish tanks, lakes, or rivers. Now, they were the dominant species on the planet, blissfully unaware of their past lives.
When he arrived at the pet store, Kendall immediately headed toward the human section. There was an entire wall full of glass tanks filled with water. There were over hundreds of humans in total spread out over numerous tanks. Days prior, those humans all had jobs and lived important lives. Now, they were tiny insignificant pets.
Kendall scanned the tanks until he found a species of humans similar to the ones his family previously owned. When he spotted a nearly identical Caucasian breed, he tracked down one of the store employees.
"How many do you want?" The worker, a young koi, asked as he opened the top of the tank.
"Just four." Kendall answered.
The tank contained numerous humans. Some of them were related, while others had no connection whatsoever. Using a mesh net, the koi scooped up four humans at random. Unbeknownst to him, it was a mother and son alongside two others who were unrelated. The four of them struggled for water as they were scooped out of the tank. Before long, though, they submerged in water again as the koi dumped them into a tiny clear plastic bag.
Satisfied, Kendall checked out and hurried home. When he arrived, he carefully concealed the bag behind his back in case his kids saw it. His wife, Darlene, was in the living room reading a book on the couch.
"Hey, did the kids find out?" Kendall asked his wife in a hushed tone.
"No. What happened? Did you manage to buy some?" Darlene responded.
"Yep." Kendall replied while he showed his wife the small bag he held. Hurriedly, he emptied the bag into the tank before finally getting to relax on the couch next to his wife.
Meanwhile, the four humans adjusted to their new environment, having much more freedom to move around. They were unaware of the surroundings outside the tank, so they were oblivious hours later when the enormous eyes of a fish observed them.
It was the family's young daughter, who was ignorant to the new humans. To her, all humans looked the same. So she had no idea that her parents had swapped them out. With her scaly fingers, she tapped against the glass as she watched her pets swim around. One man toned the pounding noise out, but a younger boy swam away out of instinct.
After grabbing a container of human food, the daughter fish shook several flakes into the tank. The four humans swam hastily to the appetizing food as it plunged into the water. At the same time, the enormous fish watched in amusement.
