Amongst the people who observed the quadruplets walking across the schoolyard was Mr Rosaro, the school janitor. He didn’t pay much attention to the girls. He was planning to clean out his storeroom of accumulated junk. It wasn’t all his own, it seemed like certain students must use it as a love nest. Lately he had found used condoms and discarded, soiled clothing amongst other junk in there. The doors lock had been broken – for the second time in the last month. These students were determined. He was carrying a large bin to throw the junk into. If he was quick enough he might even be able to get rid of it all this afternoon as the garbage truck was due to pick up the industrial bins.
Jake meanwhile was still enduring Mrs McKenzie’s lesson. She was sure the teacher was picking on her. Twice she had been asked questions by the teacher and each time she had no idea of the answer. The whole class seemed to be snickering at her. Jake had thought Ruby Donaldson had a charmed life, but perhaps her life was not as ideal as Jake had imagined. She glanced at the clock on the wall. 20 more minutes until the bell went.
Mrs Brown the VP was waiting impatiently in the infirmary for the school nurse to turn up. She had been looking for Mrs Hastie when Ruby Donaldson had come to the infirmary. The girl was having some sort of mental breakdown, perhaps caused by a sexual assault. She had the girl lie down on the bed in the infirmary and thought it best not to leave her alone until either the nurse or the girl's mother turned up.
The girl was babbling on about Gareth Jones, but not making a lot of sense. Mrs Brown purposefully tuned out. She didn’t want to consider the consequences if the girl had been assaulted and the school had to inform the police. It just didn’t make sense. Gareth was an upstanding student who had just been appointed as the football captain and Ruby was the school tart. Where the hell was the nurse? Where was the principal?
