Sarah McMillan sighed as she placed the last of her belongings in her new office. Finally after years of hard work, the young agent had earned her long desired promotion. "Hey Sarah how's the move going?"
Sarah glanced up, a small smile forming on her face as she gazed at her newest subordinate and long-time friend. "So far so good Dave," she said. "Looking forward to getting to work." Dave nodded, strolling over to his new boss as she began to empty one of her boxes. "Never got a chance to congratulate you on the promotion," he said. "Know you've been working hard to get the big office."
Sarah chuckled, thanking Dave as she began placing photos in her new office. At only 38 years of age, Sarah had already distinguished herself within DHS as a top notch field agent. Now, with a promotion and a team of CIA agents with her, she was looking forward to getting to work. "It might be a desk job Dave but I'm a field agent at heart. Which is why I'm going to need your help with a pet project of mine."
"Ugh not this again," Dave groaned. "Cmon Sarah you gotta let that go."
Sarah shook her head, glancing at the photo in her hand. "I'm not letting this go Dave," she said. "Alec Dyson was a friend and mentor to me."
Dave and Sarah now glanced at the photo of a younger Sarah and her missing mentor Alec Dyson. A few years back, before Covid had ravaged the globe, Agent Dyson had gone to investigate a series of unusual events in New England. Dyson was convinced something unnatural was happening in this area and had gone to investigate. The last anyone had heard from him was he had interviewed a former Marine named Cole Harris and his relatives before vanishing.
What Sarah and the others did not know was Dyson's involvement after the supernatural had invaded Earth. Thanks to a reality altering spell no one without magic remembered any of this. The invasion by the supernatural had been covered up, however, just because the event itself had been concealed didn't mean that the people involved were forgotten. This was the case with Alec Dyson.
Dyson had been considered an eccentric if not brilliant agent. Jokingly referred to as Fox Mulder, Dyson had made a career investigating some of the more unusual cases that had come to the attention of DHS, the FBI, and even the CIA. Despite his eccentricities, Dyson was a competent agent, helping to solve more than a few cold cases.
What no one knew, aside from those who remembered the supernatural realms breaching Earth, was that Dyson had assisted those the magical world had considered an enemy. In reality Agent Dyson had captured and tortured several wizards and their supernatural allies. In the end, Dyson had met a grizzly fate thanks to Cole Harris's time traveling son Tom. These facts though weren't known to the public at large, specifically Sarah McMillan.
"Alec's been missing for almost 3 years now," Sarah stated. "No one has even lifted a finger. They simply wrote him off and buried it."
"Well Dyson was a bit eccentric," Dave replied. Sarah furrowed her brow, quieting her old friend. "I'm just saying it's probably best to not poke the bear on this one."
"You know me Dave," Sarah smirked. "Sometimes I can't help stirring up the shit pot a little." Dave sighed, realizing she wasn't going to let this go. Dyson was her friend, her mentor, his disappearance viewed as a missing persons case. The government presumed he was dead, probably thanks to some serial killer and buried in the woods somewhere. Considering Dyson had ruffled some feathers before vanishing, the higher ups in the government weren't going to waste resources conducting an extensive search.
Unfortunate they hadn't counted on Sarah's tenacity. She was highly regarded amongst her superiors, despite her friendship with the quirky Dyson. A strong sense of loyalty to her old mentor and a flawless record meant she had a bit of a longer leash when it cane to cases the agency wanted left alone. "So whats the plan Sarah," Dave sighed.
"Small operation," Sarah grinned. "I was able to get a small window to investigate Alec's disappearance and see what he was trying to uncover. Figure it would be a four man team. You, me, and a couple of agents we trust."
"Any idea who's joining us on this wild goose chase?"
"Theres a couple of newbies that made a good impression," Sarah stated. "I'll organize the team, you make the arrangements. We go in, find out what we can about Alec, and submit the report. Hopefully we can find him alive." Dave sighed, nodding in response before leaving the office. As he did, Sarah once more glanced at the photo of Alec Dyson, hopeful she could find out what her old mentor had discovered.
