Marco decided to meet with Alexei. He needed to find out why the FBI were hanging around Nikola's vehicle.
They met at a run down park, where Alexei and a henchman were visiting the drug addicts and petty criminals.
"Comrad! It is good to see you again. You should warn me before you and the boss come for a visit. You make me concerned that you don't trust me" Despite his words, the burly Alexie seemed pleased to greet Marco.
"Da, staryy drug, my proshli dolgiy put" they shook hands "But I should talk in English. Do you know Ruby? Selena's daughter"
"Yes we met before. Hello again Ruby. I see you have found some clothes that fit" Kurt just nodded. She had no idea who this man was. However he too also thought she was Ruby
"So what's going on? Fill me in. Why was Nikola in town? Where is he now? What exactly are we looking for and why are the police all over Nikola's car?"
"I hoped you knew those answers old friend. From what I gather we are looking for a briefcase that was stolen from Nikola's car. We are spreading word around town that should it be returned, all will be forgiven. As to Nikola, I don't know why he was here. He must have had other business?"
"Do you know why your Papa was here Ruby?" Marco directed that question to Kurt. He was a bit suspicious about the girl. When he had last spoken to Nikola he had been told to fetch Ruby from her school. Nikola had clearly been searching for Ruby. "Something tells me you didn't come here with him"
Kurt knew she must be looking guilty. She wasn't ready to admit who she really was. Although these guys seemed friendly enough to her, alarm bells were ringing. They were certainly wary of the police and FBI. She tried to think of a plausible lie. Something as close to the truth as possible.
"He was looking for me. I was in an accident. I was taken to the hospital here. Papa came to take me home, but then he disappeared"
"Go on... Tell me more. What sort of accident?"
The lie had to grow, Kurt was winging it "I was running away" That's what Kurt thought the real Ruby (Or at least who she thought was the real Ruby) had been doing last night. "I hitched a ride in a truck out of town. But then I woke in the hospital"
"Why the police?"
"I was found unconscious in a truck that had crashed. The driver had disappeared. The police were investigating what had happened. They wanted to interview me"
"So you rang your Papa and he came to collect you?"
"The police might have rung him. He was in the hospital when I regained consciousness" That was the truth "He left saying he would return soon but he never did"
"So do you know what was so import in his brief case and why the FBI are here?"
"A necklace. That's what the FBI are after. They call it an artefact"
Their conversation was cut short by a blare of sirens as the park was besieged by multiple squad cars. "Stay where you are! Hands in the air!"
