"It's such a shame about Pava," Beelzebub sighed with fake pity as he poured Lucifer a glass of scotch. Lucifer had stopped by for brunch, clearly looking for advice in these troubled times. "Cruciata's beside herself, of course," Beelzebub went on. "The poor was always intensely emotional. You should have seen her when she was six and I told her she was too young to ride a nightmare."
"She always did love those creatures," Lucifer said, nostalgically recalling all the times he had brought Maisy to socialize with Cruciata in the hopes that they would fall in love.
"She owns a whole stable of them now," Beelzebub remarked. "The neighing and whinnying can be deafening in the east side of my garden. My point is, it doesn't take much to make my youngest child cry, and this has nearly broken her."
"It's strange," Lucifer said as he sipped his scotch. "Cruciata appears to be the ringleader of this scheme, but her fiancee was just nearly killed. Do you not see the contradiction?"
"I thought about that," Beelzebub answered. Now was the time to kill two birds with one stone: deflect suspicion from himself and paint Heaven as mobilizing for war. "If you ask me, Cruciata is just a pawn. She has some magical skill, but the sorcery required to summon Chaos into Hell would require a senior demon OR a senior angel."
"That does make sense," Lucifer sighed, stroking his goatee. "Do you have any suspects."
"This has Kushiel's fingerprints all over it," said Beelzebub. "After all, he leads Heaven's Inquisition. Whether he's acting alone or on God's orders, he has access to the information required to uncover such a ritual. Furthermore, this covert assassination business with the Iron Knights is just his style. Mark my words, old friend, Kushiel is trying to murder your daughter's betrothed to restart the war. Perhaps God even ordered him to do so to justify a planned attack."
"I refuse to hear anything bad about Jehovah," Lucifer said firmly. "He raised me and my siblings alongside his own children. Kushiel, on the other hand... yes, I think you may be onto something with that bastard. Michael's always complaining about him."
"I'd look into Kushiel if I were you," said Beelzebub. Success! Now Lucifer would be off on some wild goosechase to prove Kushiel was trying to kill Rachel and let Beelzebub get on with killing him. Lucifer was truly a pleasure to manipulate sometimes. "A toast to Kushiel's failure, Lucifer!"
"To Kushiel's downfall!" Lucifer echoed before finishing his scotch. "Well, I must speak with Nergal about sending the secret police to gather intelligence on Kushiel and Heaven's Inquisition. Farewell."
"Farewell," Beelzebub smiled, internally gloating to himself about how Nergal was one of Beelzebub's greatest allies and would happily help frame Kushiel. This was deliciously easy!
