"I'm the ringbearer" Billie explained "You know, like Frodo."
Toni giggled. "Does that make me Sam, or Gollum?" Her voice turned guttural. "Precious." Toni and Billie were both fantasy nerds, one thing that had drawn them together. It was weird reading about a time when there had been boys or watching movies with grizzled male actors who were now cute actresses (Bryanna Blessed, still radiating majesty, was the diminutive Pixie Queen in the Pixie Adventures series aimed at 6-10 year olds), but they both liked the old stuff as compared to the newer fantasies set in all-girl worlds. (The Harry Potter fandom was fiercely divided between fans of the original series and JK Rowling's still in progress eleven-volume, post-Great Change all-girl Sally Potter series.)
Billie and Toni were experiencing puberty together, and their relationship was changing in ways subtle and obvious. They had kissed for the first time last week, and neither was quite sure how they felt about it.

"Yum" said Teresa.

"It's simple" said Juliana, who had been a best man on several occasions before the Great Change "Be an oasis of calm in the chaos around you, and don't, seriously don't, lose the ring."
Millie laughed nervously. "OK, I guess I can handle it."
