Alex slid out of bed and began getting dressed. His head was ringing like he had a bad hangover, and he leaned against his dresser for a moment, closing his eyes in hopes of steadying himself. When he opened them again something felt off, and looking across the room he let out an abrupt shriek before covering his mouth, embarrassed.
Across the room was a large mirror, mounted on the wall. Alex stared, dumbfounded, as he saw he were now sporting a very long mane of hair. It was bright blonde, flowing to his mid back, and looked like the kind of hair he saw on models. It practically shimmered in the bright sunlight steaming into the room.
Alex gave it a tentative tug and quickly realized that this was, in fact, his hair, instead of a wig or something. But how was that possible? Hair didn’t grow that fast, and his hair certainly hadn’t been bright blonde before.
A knock on his door followed a few minutes later. “Alex? Are you okay?” The sound of Aunt Hannah’s voice from outside the room temporarily paused Alex’s panic and confusion. He rushed to the door and opened it. His aunt stood out there in the hallway, a concerned look on her face. “My hair—“ Alex began before she cut him off. “Looks beautiful on you, dear! I hope you thanked your stylist!” Alex felt an odd sense of calm wash over him. Suddenly, the fact that his hair had changed so drastically no longer seemed like a big deal.
“You sure? I shouldn’t cut it?” Alex asked. Hannah shook her head emphatically. “It looks lovely just the way it is now, dear. Now, take a shower and meet me downstairs, I’ve got a fun day planned for us.” Alex nodded and headed for the bathroom. As he soaked under the warm water he closed his eyes, enjoying the tingling feeling washing over him. It felt so good…..
After his shower, Alex got dressed and headed downstairs. Aunt Hannah was sitting in the living room, reading what looked like a very old book. “There you are.” She said with a grin. “Ready to head out to the mall?” “The mall?” Alex questioned. “Of course, dear. We need to get you clothes that fit.” His aunt replied.
Clothes that fit? Alex thought, confused. His t-shirt and pants were….actually too big for him. Huh. How had he not noticed that before? He shifted uncomfortably. “I’m just glad your older sister left some clothes behind before she moved out.” His aunt continued. “They should work perfectly.” Alex gaped at her. “What? Why do I have to wear Claire’s clothes?” He protested. “Doesn’t Jake have anything I could wear?” Hannah shook her head. “Your brother cleaned out his room before he moved. I checked.” She replied.
“But what if my friends see me?” Alex protested. Hannah rolled her eyes. “Sarah didn’t seem bothered, did she?” She asked. “I am sure your friends will love your new look! They may even want to spend more time with you” she added, giving Alex a wink. Alex, unable to come up with another objection, gave in with a sigh, heading into the bathroom to change.
He walked back out a minute later, now clad in a pair of daisy dukes and a pale pink top. To his shock, Alex found the outfit fit him perfectly, much better than his old clothes had.
“You look wonderful!” His aunt said. “Now, to the mall!”
