Audrey grabbed the girl's hand and hauled her through the window, thanking her lucky stars that the barmaid was light and petite. Just in time, they ran off as the last wall of the inn vanished.
Trees sprang up in an instant, and vegetation grew over the pathways. In seconds, no sign of human presence remained, only a small virgin forest. It was a home fit for a herd of unicorns.
Spell ended, the unicorn stallion looked over the scenery with smug satisfaction. Sure, two of the pesky humans had escaped, but that eyesore of a human building was finally gone. Sure, there were other human buildings nearby, but in this small pocket of pure, untouched nature, he once more felt at home.
As for present company, he considered that the biggest improvement. Eighteen beautiful mares now stood around him. His loving herd. One by one, the newcomers greeted him, rubbing against him and taking in his scent as he took in theirs. Then, they moved on to greet their sisters.
With this many mares, the stallion could finally begin to establish a hierarchy. Every decent sized herd needed one. Currently, all his mares were simply part of the harem, there for companionship and breeding.
However, he would have to promote two or more to beta females. These would help protect the harem and discipline their sisters. Sadly, this would mean they could not be bred unless they were demoted back to the harem. Or promoted.
First and foremost, though, he needed to choose a queen (or queens, in the case of twins). As the alpha female, she would be his primary mate and liaison with the herd. Through a sort of unicorn telepathy, she would channel his commands to the others.
Choosing a queen was very important, since her personality, talents, and even breeding characteristics tended to bleed over into the rest of the herd. If she was docile or aggressive, magic or more physical, amorous or coy, these traits would give the herd different strengths and weaknesses. Of course, the stallion could replace her at any time if she displeased him or if he simply needed different strengths for his herd for the moment. Only his own position was secure unless a better stallion challenged him someday.
Thus, the unicorn inspected his mares carefully.
(While the unicorns no longer think of themselves by their old names, I'll use their old names in the options to simplify things. Of course, their names can be changed later, as well.)
