The dice bounced across the gameboard and came to a stop.
"Snake eyes!" Delilah said. "Aw, bad luck."
"Fuck off," Brooklyn said. "We don't even know what the spaces are."
She'd landed on a light pink space. According to the rules printed on the back of the game box, that meant she had to draw a card of the corresponding color. "Jesus, that deck's huge," Amelia said. It almost didn't fit in Brooklyn's hand as she moved cards from the top to the bottom until she got to a light pink one.
"Okay, what is this? Like a challenge or something?" Brooklyn said, laying the card down for all to see.
Nicole read out the couplet on the card:
"You've thrown the dice your first time! Your quartet is welcome here.
Now roll again - you're growing younger by that many years.
If doubles you should roll, then throw a single extra die,
and if need be then player two gives motherhood a try."
Brooklyn picked the dice up and looked at her friends. "Is this a joke? Like, there's no such thing as magic."
Nicole took a deep breath. "Guys... look at that first line. Isn't it weird that it knows there are four of us?"
Amelia shook her head. "It says there's four players. That just means the game's meant for four players."
"And the fact that it knows it's Brooklyn's first turn?" Delilah said. "I don't know, this is making me nervous. I'm player two. What's the card talking about when--"
"You're both full of it," Brooklyn scoffed. "I'm gonna roll great."
"By which you mean low, I assume."
"Shut up, Nicole." Brooklyn tossed the dice again. She felt a tingling sensation fall over her entire body as they came up...
