It was always the way when they heard the German accent, Gunther thought. Nazi scientist, Mengele, you could almost see the wheels turning in their heads. No matter that the Third Reich had fallen nearly a century ago and the only actual NSDAP member in Gunther's family, a Great-Great uncle, had died on the Russian front. Gunther didn't mind though--it was usually rather amusing and sometimes it could be leveraged. If anyone had bothered to ask, though, they would have learned that Gunther had complete contempt for Nazi science. Mengele was clearly an idiot whose work, putting aside ethics for the moment, was simply worthless. Gunther wouldn't have hired him to wash out test tubes.
But Gunther's rejection of Naziism was far deeper than that. Nazis were unimaginative boors, slotting human beings into their dreary little categories of master race and untermenschen. They treated the genetic nature of humanity as fixed--it was the basis of their whole philosophy--when what was truly fascinating about it was that it was infinitely malleable. The "real Nazis" were the ones holding back the research that would liberate humanity into the infinitely plastic post-species life it could become. And so he had hooked up with these rich American furries and their agenda to normalize anthroformation. Gunther regarded their imaginations as somewhat limited, but importantly they were rich and they worked off the books--Gunther hated Institutional Review Boards and their obsession with "ethics."
Ultimately, though, they were funders, and funders were at best a necessary evil. Time for another meeting with Mr. M.
