Altered Fates

Wishing to Live Longer

added by LuisJM A year ago AR BM S

In a suburban neighborhood, there was a frail woman of ninety slowly walking down the sidewalk with her walking cane. Her body was mostly boney with a paunch, arched spine, and incredibly saggy breasts and an incredibly wrinkly face with squinty tired eyes and snow white hair done up in a bun. Dressed in sweater blouse, long tube skirt, granny panties, and a pair loafers, she looked like she was dressed for the winter when in reality it was the summer. Her name is Abigail O'Nelly and for ninety years of her life, she lived and great journey. She has survived through the Great Depression at a young age, World War II in her teens, Vietnam in her thirties, 9/11 in her seventies, and even Covid in her late eighties. During those times, she was married to her husband, who passed away twenty years ago, have three kids, ten grandkids, and a few great grand kids. She knew that she has accomplished so much and wouldn't change anything. But deep down in her heart, she she felt like she wasn't ready to go.

See, even if she has gone through with her life, she felt like she hasn't accomplish so much in that time. There are many things that she would've done throughout the ninety years and she doesn't want to go away. A part of her wishes that she would go back into her prime and do whatever she want before Death knocks on her door. But she knew it was a complete pipe dream as there was no way in rewinding the clock back.

After a slow and tired walk, Abigail approached the bus stop and sat on the bench to wait for the bus. Opening her purse with her boney fingers, she looked for some money to pay the bus. But as she was looking for her wallet, she heard a voice next to her.

"Quite a lovely day to go out, huh?"

Hearing that, she looked to her side and saw a young man sitting on the bench dressed in a suit with a salt and pepper beard that has a hat to cover his face. Looking to him, Abigail sighed and said in her rough and raspy voice, "But of course, sonny. It is quite a nice day out. I thought I go someplace for some fresh air is all."

The man chuckled and said, "Kind of difficult for someone like you, huh?"

"What do you mean?" Abigail asked him.

"Well, you seem to be a bit too... What's the word...? Old to go out, especially in this weather."

Abigail cackled and said to him, "I might be no spring chicken, but I do wish to experience the day before my time has come."

The Man turned to her and could tell that she was hiding something. "So... You feel like you've accomplished so much in your lifetime?"

"You could say that, deary." she said to him, "All my life, I have done so much and I have no regrets. However... I feel like I'm not ready to move on. There was still so much for me to do in this world, but I am too old to do anything. Sometimes... I wish that I would go back to the prime to finish with the many things I haven't done. Too bad it's all just pipe dream."

The man heard her and felt sorry for her. With a human lifespan, there are many people that have never accomplish all the things they wish they do. Abigail is no different as she spent almost a century of her life and haven't done everything in her life. Looking on, he asked her, "So... You wish that you were young again and finish with what you want to do?"

Abigail nodded and answered with, "Yep..."

With that, the man went into his pocket and took out an old and shiny medallion dangling on his hand. "Here... Take this..."

Abigail looked on and was a little confused by the item in question. "What is that?"

The man smiled and said, "This is a special medallion that can change anyone's lives, including your own. Just place it on your neck and make whatever wish you want. I guarantee you, you will live a much longer life with this with you."

Abigail looked to the amulet and was a little hesitant with it. "I... I don't know if I can take it from you. I fear that it would be expensive as well."

The man laughed it off and stood up and get in front of her. "It's not expensive. It is free for those you wish to be whatever they want." Wrapping the medallion around her neck, he tied the string and looked right at it over her sweater blouse. "There we go. It suits you."

Abigail looked to the medallion and didn't know what to say. "Th...Thank you, sonny. I don't know what to say..."

She looked to the medallion as the man said, "Just make whatever wish your heart desires. I guarantee that it will come true, Abigail O'Nelly."

She soon heard her name and looked up to say, "Wait... How do you know my-"

But she immediately stopped as she saw no one in front of her. At the same time, the bus arrived to pick her up as the door opened. Wondering where the stranger went, she shrugged it off and got up from the bench, slowly approaching the bus. Once she paid her fair, she took her seat and the bus made its leave. Course, she still has the medallion around her neck, so all she could do is make her wish and it will come true. But where is she going?
