Jeff went back to his profile understanding that they both accepted that Jeff would eventually be replacing the inner voice of his father with someone different, so in preparation for the inevitable he started poking around the active package.
It turns out, it was still entirely modifiable. Looking through the details of the package, more options were available than there were initially. He could flat out edit the AI's perceived relationship with him, change the name and age the AI identifies as, modify the voice he hears and how the AI speaks, even allow the AI control over his internal or external systems, and with those options consent is or isn't required... that all didn't make sense to Jeff but there was an option to reset the AI completely and start over as though they were meeting for the first time. Additionally, the profile template dropdown was still enabled...
With a sly grin... 'Hey dad? Were you ever a partier? Because I'm really curious what you'd be like if you were trying to turn me into one...'
'I'm pretty sure that's a bad idea Jeff!' came the nervous sounding reply.
'Don't worry, I can change it back if you get annoying.'
'But...'
Jeff clicked enter and felt his brain tingle. 'So dad? How do you feel?' Jeff probed.
'Fine? The same? But could you not call me dad, it makes me feel so old. Call me Mike or Mikey instead.'
Jeff snickered internally at that, 'Um, sure thing Mikey. So, I'd say tell me about yourself but you seem to be modeled off my dad so I'm not really sure what to do from here."
'Yeah, I have a lot of capabilities, I'm like a whole other person in here, but I don't really need to engage when there isn't anything going on. You don't need a second opinion right now, you aren't in mental, physical, or emotional distress. So for right now, my work here is done... good job me!'
Jeff rolled his eyes but his interest was piqued, 'What kind of capabilities?'
'Well, any of us AI's are experts at operating the Chronivac and its settings, you want to be in the middle of a house party, I can clean you up, and make the downstairs a rager in about 5 minutes, 45 if you make me walk you through it.'
Jeff chuckled out loud, 'I doubt my parents or the rest of the neighborhood would approve, and its a school night."
'There's plenty of different solutions to those problems. If you want to party, as that is my specialty, I can hook you up and you won't get in trouble or be disappointed, I can assure you of that. I can teach you things, work with you on your people skills, lots of stuff.'
Jeff glanced at the rest of the the personality settings. It still showed his original description of someone who could guide him and teach him useful things about being an adult. Someone who would make him be more responsible, help him with his homework, someone who has experience in sex and also could teach him how to drive. 'Um? Da.. I mean, Mikey... Your goals are all the same as what they were when you were first set up... but you seem really different from how you were a moment ago...'
Jeff could feel the ai using his brain to think of a response, 'Right, I think being modeled off your father caused a little bit of a shock for us both but I've moved past that. In general however, as a mentor, I'd sorta want to guide you into figuring out the answers. A trainer would set everything up as a challenge for you to overcome, a detective would try to tie everything to patterns. I, as a partier, want you to have fun as you figure things out, I'm sort of biased but I think party mode is the best mode.' Jeff could feel the AI smiling as this was said and couldn't help but smile along with him. 'So even if we all have the same goals, how we interpret what those goals mean and go about dealing with them is very different.'
Jeff pondered this, it just didn't quite make sense. 'I don't get it, I thought partier was like anti-responsibility and would disregard homework all together, for example.'
'I see your point, its a common misconception and gives me a bad reputation. For example, when we get around to you drinking, I want you to know and be familiar with your limits so you know when to stop before things go too far, and if they do go too far, I want you to use a friend or service to be safe. That sounds pretty responsible to me. And as for homework... If you had to do a report you could look it up online, or, you could spend the day at a museum learning all about your topic... one sounds more fun and engaging to me, as if you might actually learn and retain some of the information... A mentor personality would probably have you lock yourself in your room until every piece of homework and every chore for that matter is finished...' Jeff could feel the mental equivalent of an eye roll.
'Huh, I expected you to be, much different... more like, trying to get me to sneak into college frat parties or bars.'
'Oh, we can totally do that too! I'd just want to make sure you have a safe place to crash or a way home, and that you don't get in trouble with any authority figures. If that's what you'd like, it would be easier if you pulled out some of the boring stuff like homework guidance
from my description and changed our relationship to best friends, but I can work with it either way. Its just the current settings gear me more for a birthday party. We could do this now if you'd like. A test run of my capabilities... that, or you can have another boring evening at home.'
