One of the interesting ways that Animalians are different from humans and the animals they resemble is their gestation terms. While there are many animals known for their rapid birth rate and others that take a slower time, Animalians stay closer to human terms in regard for how long they stay pregnant. For animals that have longer gestation periods, the Animalians narrow it down to the average 9 months like humans. Which is a big relief for elephants, rhinos, equines, bovines, and other long-term carriers. But with animals that have a brief term, Animalians extends it to about 6 months on average. And those in between carry about the same time as normal animals.
Of course, there are several Animalians who are derived from egg-laying species. Now this only applies to Animalians who actually lay their eggs instead of keeping them inside the mother's body until they've hatched like the anacondas and the sharks. In those cases, their terms are pretty much identical to placental mammals. With egg-layers, the mothers carry the growing eggs for half of the the term, typically three months, before laying their eggs. Animalian eggs, particularly reptile eggs, tend to keep growing for the next three months before they hatch. While some Animalian hatchlings might start out smaller than human newborns, they also have higher metabolism and they can quickly put on more mass until they reach the size of an infant their age.
It has been three months since Sappho and Susan (for lack of a better term) conceptualized their eggs. Fortunately, the actual laying was quick and easy. They put markings on the eggs so they could determine who's whose. Sappho's egg was marked blue and Susan's was marked pink. Over time, the growing eggs would stretch out the markings, making it easier for them to tell when they're closer to hatching.
Of course, their fellow lesbian lizards and their other sisters at ROSE threw them a little baby shower. Of course, the main baby shower won't happen until the eggs are hatched. But it was nice for Sappho and Susan to see how much their sisters cared. And they got to see how others were doing with their eggs.
"So, I'm assuming Rosco knows," said Sappho to Pho, who was carrying her egg in a baby carrier.
"I'm honestly not sure how much he wants to be involved," said Pho, "I mean, this was mainly an experiment, wasn't it?"
"Is that what you're going to tell your daughter?" asked Sappho accusingly.
"For all I know, it'll be a son," said Pho.
"And if it is, would you just give him to Rosco and not be involved?" demanded Sappho.
"Hey, hey, go easy on her," said Susan.
"Sorry, I just thought humans take families seriously," said Sappho.
Susan sighed and said, "Not always. A lot of the members of both BARA and ROSE were rejected by their families because they were...different."
"And some of our lizard sisters had families that couldn't comprehend how they've always been women," said Pho.
"Then that makes your relationship with Rosco all the more important," said Sappho.
"Look, Rosco was...fun to be with, but I don't know if we're really bond-mate material," said Pho.
"He should at least know about his own kid," said Susan, "Even if it's a boy or girl."
"Ok, but I don't think we'll end up the typical stepford family," said Pho dryly.
"Pho, 'typical' would be the last thing anyone to describe us as," said Susan.
"And I'm more than fine with that," said Sappho.
