Dmitri decided to let the letter go. He could send another letter later, after he informed the mares of their pregnancies. That way, he would have more information to share, as the mares could tell him how they came to be in their conditions.
Clover and Jenny didn't sleep for long, but it was just enough time for Dmitri to practice how he was going to tell them. Jenny didn't seem thrilled to see him when she woke, but Clover was happy. Dmitri cast the communication charm once more, again focusing it on understanding Clover, rather than Jenny. Clover could translate for her companion if needed.
"I have results from your examinations," Dmitri informed them. The ears of both mares moved forward. Dmitri took a deep breath. "You are both pregnant." Clover responded in shock, stomping the ground furiously. Jenny, however, lowered her head in shame. "Obviously, I would like to know how this happened."
"I don't know!" Clover whinnied. "I have no-" She froze. Her ears laid flat against her head. "Gelvin," she snorted angrily. She told Dmitri what she had to do to get away from Gelvin. Dmitri scowled.
"Our family will have to hear of this," he said. "We cannot let this insult lie." Clover nodded. "But, dear sister, are you certain it is not the Prince's?"
"Yes. I scanned myself when the coup was happening, so that I could be sure of how much danger I was in and how careful I needed to be."
"Then it truly is Gelvin's," Dmitri said. Clover nodded again. Dmitri shook his head in disgust. He turned to Jenny. "And you?" With Clover translating, Jenny explained the stallion that had mounted her soon after she first transformed. Dmitri could feel a headache forming. "Thank you for telling me."
"Dear brother, what are we going to do?" Clover asked. Dmitri sighed.
"I had hoped to ride the two of you to Wind's Grove, but I doubt it would be safe for you to have riders for such a long distance. There are a few things I can think of. Once we decide, I will write to the family again, as well as a loyal Royalist I can trust."
