Clover thought things over. "You said that it would be unsafe to ride us for a long distance. How about a short distance?"
Leaning on the stall door, Dmitri considered the question. "Well, I suppose a couple day's travel would be fine. That is with magic assistance, mind you, so a lot will be happening in your body that normal horses do not experience. Riding at a slower speed, you could go longer, perhaps even the whole way, but that brings the usual security risks of traveling long distances with valuable Witch's Ponies. You may as well be escorted by my Royalist contacts. There are more of them, for one thing. We just have to wait for them to arrive here, which may take an additional ten days."
"Unless we meet them partway," Clover said. "Two day's travel for a Witch's Pony is easily worth two week's travel for a normal horse. Your Royalist friends would need only to travel a few days then. Once we rendezvous along the way, we can all go together. What could be safer?"
Dmitri raised an eyebrow. "You really like your complicated plans, don't you, sister. Still, it just might solve all our worries. I'll have a lot of letters to send, but I'll manage." Straightening back up, he brushed off his sleeves. "Frankly, I really wish we could just seize that Gelvin and drag him to Wind's Grove with us for questioning, but Jenny's safety must come first. We wouldn't want him to figure out her identity or put us all in danger to save his own skin. Once she is securely at the family estate, we can see about that scoundrel."
With that, he left the mares alone.
Clover turned to Jenny. "I'm sorry, Jenny. I didn't know."
Jenny lowered her head. "I didn't tell you. I was too ashamed."
"Ashamed of what?" Clover tossed her head and snorted. "You were caught unawares. It was not your fault. If anything, it's mine. This is all my fault, your pregnancy, my own, this whole curse."
"You still saved me, Clover," Jenny reminded her. "I'd probably be in rebel hands if not for you. Things will get better. I know they will." She reached over and nibbled at the other Witch's Pony's mane affectionately. After a while, Clover nibbled back.
The mares bonded for a while more. They were just happy to be safe for now. Having Dmitri and his wife there would certainly help things. Hopefully, no other complications would arise.
