Smells Like Trouble

added by A 8 months ago A BM S

That slight glimpse is enough to scare the bejeebers out of you, but you know you can't think about it, you just need to focus on running, especially since you are moving at a speed faster than most cars would be on that road, and you had never even taken a driving lesson yet. You head out in a straight line down the road, not turning into an sidestreets, knowing that a turn would slow your speed and could jostle the hero off your back, even though staying on the same road means the villain will probably see you the minute it makes it to the park entrance.

Even though you know this, you are also considering your surroundings. You need a place deserted and quiet enough to change back, far away enough that the villain won't find you, and with a path leading there that won't attract unwanted attention. You know this town, but there were definitely areas you didn't usually go, and you weren't sure that going there now was a good idea. Your only advantage over this villain might be that you knew where you were going, and the villain would not.

While this may seem like a lot to consider, it flashes through your mind faster than you would have thought possible. As does a possible escape route. Although you were normally a responsible person, when younger you would often take shortcuts through back-alleys home, in order to buy time to stop by the bookshop or the library. Some were just narrow and dark, but there were also some that had dumpsters from restaurants or other businesses with perishable goods which you hated going by because of the smell. But smell was just what you needed now, as well as a big honking dumpster to hide behind.

Just as you finally turn into a side street, you again catch a glimpse during the turn of the villain, which has just reached the entrance of the park and spots you. With a destination in mind, you no longer concentrate on the villain, but focus on making your way as fast as possible.

After numerous twists and turns through narrow alleyways and around buildings, you finally reach your goal: a huge, smelly dumpster behind a large buffet restaurant. While there may be people in the restaurant, no one came out to the back very often except to dispose of trash, which they usually didn't have time for until later in the evening. Hence, it was the perfect place to hide from the villain, assuming it had no special ability that would let it track you down.

Although you are gasping for breath, and nearly ready to retch at the smell emanating from the dumpster thanks to your overly-sensitive feline nose, you manage to slide your backpack and the hero off your back and into the space behind the dumpster. You wonder exhaustedly how to get yourself to change back, but almost as though it actually cared about your opinion, the costume reverts, leaving you on your hands and toes in a dirty alley. However, you have no time to be disgusted, and hurriedly grab your clothes out of your backpack and throw them on. Finally looking like a normal human, you crouch behind the dumpster with the still-unconscious hero, praying the villain would pass you by.

After what seems like an eternity, rather than the villain, you see law enforcement and some curious civilians run past the alley entrance in the direction you came from.

"The heroes are fighting it right now--" you vaguely hear someone call out. While there is no guarantee it is a reference to the villain that targeted you, at least it seems other heroes are in the vicinity. It also means you need to get out of here before someone notices you or the hero comes to. Wiping off your hands and feet with some santizer, you slip on your shoes and trot away, leaving the hero there. When you are a good distance away, you dig out your cell phone and dial.

"Emergency, how may I be of assistance?" you hear a voice on the other end of the line.

"I saw a hero in the alley behind the Grand Buffet Restaurant! He looked hurt, please send help!" you quickly say and hang up. While you know your call will probably be traced, at least you can pose as an innocent passerby. The hero probably can't identify you either, considering the state he was in and the darkness in the tunnel. You just might have gotten away with it.
