Despite the surprise splashdown, Jenn swam to the nearest beach with relative ease thanks to her years on the high school swim team. She Plopped down on the sand and watched two more people swimming to shore: Kelly and a handsome guy she hadn't met before. Kelly seemed to struggle and the guy had to help her the last part of the distance to shore.
Kelly practically crawled out of the ocean, and coughed up some water she'd accidentally swallowed. The guy made sure she was okay then turned to Jenn.
"You okay?" Jenn nodded. She was still a little stunned. "I'm Oliver. Kelly and I started dating over the holiday break."
"Kelly, are you okay?" asked Jenn.
Kelly coughed. "I'm not much of a swimmer."
Oliver surveyed the scenery. "It's like something out of 'Blue Lagoon.'"
The three sat silently for a bit, gazing out at the calm waters, listening to the gentle lapping of the light surf and distant call of birds.
Once Kelly had seemed to recover from her near-drowning, they began to explore the island. They found no sign of civilization. They found another side of the island where larger waves crashed onto a rocky island. The jungle in between seemed vibrant, colorful, and surprisingly passable. The plants seemed unfamiliar, but their fruit looked appetizing.
They returned to the calm bay where they had started and, with Oliver's direction, worked to build a simple shelter for the night. Jenn and Kelly build a fire while Oliver fashioned a crude spear and waded out. He soon returned with three fish. Oliver explained he had been an Eagle Scout, but the fish - like the plants - were unfamiliar. They cleaned the fish as best they could then cooked them over the fire. Kelly ate hers with particular trepidation.
Afterwards they discussed what had happened and how they had gotten here. They all remembered the impossibility of being pulled into the same oval mirror, then the next thing they knew they were in the water. It didn't make any sense. "Magic, I guess," Jenn suggested with a resigned shrug.
Desperate for water, Oliver found something that looked kind of like a coconut and cracked it open. Sure enough, the inside was white and watery and tasted like a cross between a coconut and a pineapple. They watched a tranquil sunset over the bay then curled up to sleep, unsure what their future held.
Kelly curled up in Oliver's arms. Jenn initially lay down nearby, but during the night she woke up shivering from the cool night air. She moved by Oliver to keep warm. Half-asleep, he instinctively put an arm around her. The three slept comfortably through the night.
