Jay woke up to a bright morning. He had slept in. He let out a deep sigh as he rested his head on his pillow, pulling up the covers. Then he gave a start, sitting up suddenly.
He had left the vials in the kitchen. Jacob leaped out of bed and threw on a pair of pajama pants. He staggered down the stairs, and into the living room.
His mom looked up from a magazine she was reading. Amelia was sitting at the table in her pink bathrobe. She was wearing her bra and panties underneath, and she had stepped out of her slippers. She looked up at him. “Morning sleepyhead.” Jacob walked past her, “Morning mom.”
Amelia was sipping a cup of coffee. Her long brown hair looked like she had just brushed it. She had a content look in her eyes as she paged through her magazine. Jacob gave her little more than a passing glance as her moved down the hall.
Summer was in the living room, sprawled out on one of the couches. She had a glass of orange juice by the loveseat that was about half full, and she appeared to be sleeping. She wore a loose fitting t-shirt and a pair of shorts. Jacob quietly stepped around her.
He spotted Sophie as he passed by the doorway to her room. The sunlight was shining bright through her window, and the girl sat on her bed. She was still wearing pajamas, and she appeared to be scrolling through her phone. She looked up for a moment, gave him a little wave, and then went back to her phone. The whole house seemed calm. Jacob sighed with relief.
He went into the kitchen.
