Chronivac Version 4.0

Mystery Delivery

added 17 years ago O

To say that Jessica's week had been unpleasant would have been a serious understatement. From the test on Monday which had material on it that hadn't been covered in class or in any of the readings, to discovering on Tuesday that the sorority that when had been wanting to pledge for would under no circumstances accept her, to the incident in the lunch room on Thursday where she found out that Brian, the guy she had been kind of dating was going out with Sarah, one of the girls in the sorority whom she had thought to be her friend, it had been a terrible week. Now it was Friday and she was hoping that things would start looking up on the weekend, though she had no idea how. One thing she could be thankful for was that she had finished all her work early and that the professor of her last class had decided for no particular reason to cancel an five page essay. She suspected that it was because he liked grading their papers as little as they liked writing them, but she wasn't one to look a gift horse in the mouth. So maybe she had something to work with, after all having no work on a weekend meant plenty of free time. She could figure out something to make up for what had happened during the rest of the week.

It had been a while since she had last checked her mail so she decided that the mail room would be her first stop. No one ever wrote to her anyway so she didn't really see any reason to check regularly.

After fumbling with the keys to her mail box she was able to get it open no thanks to whatever idiot had thought it would be a brilliant idea to put gum over the keyholes of as many mail boxes as possible. It was yet another thing she was ready to put into her tally of bad things that had happened during the week until she saw that she had a package pick up slip. A quick look at the date revealed that it had been there for a week at the least. Hoping that whatever it was, it wasn't perishable she rushed went to see what she had been sent.

Upon picking it up she decided that the box was nothing to get excited about. It was a plain brown box, wrapped heavily with packaging tape and the return address too badly smudged to read. By the looks of it the guys in the mail room had used it as a place to put their coffee mugs.

She went back to her room to open the box and was equally disappointed with what was inside, a little note that read "Congratulations, you have been chosen to test the Chronivac version 4.0" and a CD-ROM and a few other items that she didn't bother to look at. There was nothing else, no labels, no instructions, and most of all no explanation.

She wasn't a computer whiz, but with nothing else to do she decided to see what the disk had on it. If it was a virus or something stupid like that it didn't matter, the laptop in her room was given to her by the school so if something went wrong she just had to take it to the tech guys and they'd give her a replacement. One way or another the disk would be a good way to kill some time.

Putting it in she saw that Chronivac 4.0 was something that she would have to install. Uninterested in all the details she just went through the motions and did what was needed. Clicking here and there, typing 'yes' when needed and all the other things that went with installing something unnecessarily complex.

Finally it was done and she was able to restart her computer and see exactly what sort of beast she had put on it.

Clicking on the Chronivac icon an odd menu came up. The list of options was boggling at first until she realized that it must have been some sort of joke program. She filled in the blanks with what she wanted and it would make a story or a funny picture or something like that. With nothing better to do she decided to give it a try. She had time to kill and it might be funny to play around a little.
