Derrick Harris sat in his living room chair reading a book, when he suddenly felt a tug at his foot and looked down to see a one year-old boy with short red hair looking up at him with a smile.
"Dear, I think our son wants to spend some time with his daddy." Morgan said as she sat on her knees on the floor with some child's toys.
"Hey there champ, do you want to hear about my favorite hero? His name was Tom, he was my daddy, your grandpa. He may have come off as tough and scary, but he was a big soft teddy bear and he especially loved his grandchildren. I hope he would've loved you. To see you smile and laugh like this..." Derrick said as he tickled his young son's belly making him giggle and laugh and making Morgan chuckle as well.
Before Derrick could say or do anything else, Derrick and Morgan both heard a loud fart sound and a bad smell and knew it was time once again to change their young son's diaper.
"I really can't believe you're a year old already. Seems like just yesterday you were born. No drama, no cause for alarm. I'm glad at least your grandma got to see you before...before things went sideways." Derrick said wiping away his tears as he began to cry making their young son cry too.
"Alright, hon, I'll take care of this one." Morgan reassured her husband as she gently got her young son's attention.
"Hi there, Garrett, that's your name, isn't it? Garrett. But you're probably going to say it like, 'Gawett' when you're a little older. Daddy's just a little sad because he doesn't have his mommy and daddy around anymore." Morgan said as she changed the diaper on Garret.
"But they were good people and they loved each other and their kids and grand kids very much. You know, I almost missed out on being with your daddy a long time ago, but we both found each other again. We got married, and I had you, and there's no other little baby I wanted to hold in my arms." Morgan said as she cradled Garrett in her arms then looked at the family photos and a frown grew on her face.
"Morgan, what is it? Something wrong with Garrett?" Derrick asked worriedly.
"No, he's perfect. Perfect in every way. But he's just ordinary, he doesn't have any powers, he's not part animal or whatever, he's just....human and I'm....a little worried he might not fit in with the other kids when he grows up more." Morgan admitted.
"Whatever the kind of person he grows up into becoming, he'll still be our son and we'll love him for it. Maybe he'll be a daring adventurer, traveling the world with a beautiful girl at his side and beckon call." Derrick teased.
"Oh, come on. Our son, a world renown explorer? I can hardly imagine." Morgan said looking at the sleeping one year-old.
"We should just count ourselves lucky that he's grown to be such a beautiful, healthy, boy. My dad.....my mom.....they both would just love him. Like how much I love him." Derrick said as he tried to hold back tears.
Morgan gently held her husband's hands and looked up at him.
"If you need a shoulder to cry on, I'm here." Morgan offered him with a smile as they made their way over to their bed, where Derrick gave a quiet cry for his parents. He looked over at his sleeping son and back at his wife. He felt he was lucky to have two great people in his life.
