Wendy sat on a small bench beside the main water feature just past the gates of the Mythical Renaissance Festival. She was looking down at her cell phone just scrolling as she waited for her “friend” to show up. Wendy had been coming to the fair since she was six years old with her family and now she out of college and was about to enter her “adult” life. Throughout that entire time, she had always come to the fair with her next-door neighbor, a girl the same age as she was Samantha.
She had many good memories of this place with Samantha, doing the children’s games when they where little kids. Enjoying the shows as young teenagers and then pretending to not like them as older teenagers.
Wendy frowned a bit, they where 14 when Samantha family moved across the state and they began to drift apart.
Maybe that was always going to happen, Wendy was a book work and leaned heavily into what many would call goth culture. She had on black eyeliner and was wearing a black corset with a matching long dress. She had a spider web’s tattoo which ran down her right arm. She knew being the sexy goth was the in thing right now but while she considered herself sexy she wasn’t over the top and even if it wasn’t the in thing, this was her style.
She was goth, Samantha was not.
If anything Samantha was a girly, girl. She was a popular cheerleader in her new school. She was the life of any party yet wouldn’t be out of place singing in the church choir on Sunday. Last year she had come dressed as a fairy and it really well.
Even after all these years and that they could go weeks or maybe months without talking, they would meet every year at this fair and spend the day together.
“Just got through the gate.” Came a text over her phone as Wendy looked up looking for Samantha, wondering if she had come alone or with more of her friends and which of the next experiences did they want to go to.
