Transform or Dare?

Convincing Daniel

added 17 years ago A

"Is it true?" Jennifer asked, sitting down next to Daniel in math class. "Did you give Kyle Perkins a black eye?"

"It's nice to see you, too," Daniel coldly replied.

"Tell me," Jennifer demanded, gnashing her canine teeth.

"Not unless you tell me," he retorted, "About what happened yesterday between you and him."

Jennifer recoiled. How did he know about that? She was at a loss for words, but just before she could think of how to respond, the teacher cleared his throat to begin class.

"All right, everyone. Clear your desks. Pop quiz. No talking, no cell phones, no notes. And Jennifer, would you be so kind as to subdue that cheery sounding collar of yours?" He handed the test papers to the head of each row.

During the quiz, Jennifer had trouble concentrating. Math wasn't her best subject anyway, though she wasn't in danger of failing the class. Her mind kept focusing on what Kyle and Daniel were doing talking and/or fighting yesterday. Did they know each other? Were they somehow good friends? She kept adjusting her top. The heat was hard to take, and her fur was itchy. Occasionally she would shift enough to cause her bell to jingle, prompting a disgruntled look from her teacher and a few classmates. She finished the test as quickly as she could under the circumstances and tried to sit completely still for the remainder of the class.

Once the bell rang, Jennifer took Daniel into the hall and confessed everything, whether he would believe it or not. She told him what the collar did, why Kyle cursed her and demanded to know what Daniel knew about the situation.

"Wait, so every time someone asks a question about the collar you change?" he asked in disbelief. "But you look the same as you always did."

"Could you please NOT talk about my collar like that? You just started it again...here, look! Don't you see this?" She held up her arms, where her fur was quickly thickening.

"Your fur. So what?"

"It's GROWING!"

Daniel stared at her arms, not quite understanding what she meant.

"For crying out loud, the curse is making you think nothing wrong, but something is very wrong, believe me! Two days ago I was completely human, now I'm almost completely turned into the freakish dog-girl Kyle fantasizes about! This isn't right and something in your brain must realize that."

It was beginning to dawn on Daniel. He looked Jennifer over from the tips of her ears down to the torn shoes she was wearing. Thick, furry claws had burst their way through the toes of her shoes.

"Oh, jeez! Now I don't even have shoes," Jennifer cursed. She fumbled with them and managed to yank them off so her feet wouldn't feel uncomfortable. "See this?" she held up a shoe. "Why would I wear a shoe that didn't even fit me? A shoe that's broken?"

"Okay, enough," Daniel said. "You've convinced me. You want to know what happened with Kyle yesterday? The truth is..."
