Jen is terrified of her changes, but also of what the school body now thinks of her. She can already read the minds of the other classmates.
"It's not even halloween yet!" "Is that your idea of a goth phase?" "Wonderful. Now our class would have one less gossip girl."
Jen, too cowardly to face the day in the costume she is now stuck with, runs away from the school campus. Everyone is rather puzzled of the mime suddenly emerging from the school bus and running away. Maybe she got the wrong bus?
But Jen didn't look back. She kept running until she bumped into an invisible wall. Much to the amusement of the school body. Then she stepped aside and kept running. And eventually, she made it out in the street. Far away from the school building and not far from the suburbs where she first came from.
Jen is exhausted from the running. She would be panting heavily if she had a working voice box. Despite the sweat and tears, her makeup was never ruined. It's like her white face has become her skin. She is beating herself up from being cowardly and running away from her problems. She leans on an invisible wall to sob on for a few minutes before gasping and realizing that there's nothing to lean on.
Jen took a cautious look at her gloved hands and thought that it would be nice to have something to cool down after all the running. She imagined that she's holding a bottle of water. And she imagined that she is opening the bottle of water and drinking it. And before she knew it, she felt the rush of cold water down her throat. She felt refreshed.
Jen realized that her newfound mime life may have some benefits after all. She may be stuck in a costume and has lost her ability to produce sound, but she can at least bring her imagination to life.
With her newfound confidence, Jen takes a deep breath and looks at her surroundings to determine what to do next.
A highway bridge looms over the road she is currently walking down. And a community bus stop is in view down the road. Both the highway bridge and the road she's standing on cross over a river that runs below. Further down the road is the suburban neighborhood she called home. There's also a clearing where she can escape into the woods.
