"It's a girl!" the doctor announced, holding up their baby. Jim and Stacey were thoroughly shocked. The baby looked just like Mikey had before he went into the womb. But with a different set of downstairs equipment.
"What do we do?" Stacey whispered as their baby girl was wisked away to be cleaned.
"Call her Mikayla, I guess," Jim said. Stacey couldn't help but laugh at that. She leaned back in the bed, exhausted.
"Whatever the name, that baby was huge. The biggest newborn I've ever seen."
"Hopefully the next one will be smaller," Jim said. He kissed Stacey. "A bit easier on your lovely body."
"Aw, babe," Stacey cooed.
Finally, their baby girl was brought back to them. Stacey exposed her breasts and began to nurse.
"Welcome home, Mikayla," Jim whispered, stroking the baby's hair, dark red like his.
Mikey, now Mikayla, squirmed in her Mommy's arms. During her time in the womb, she'd been able to think and come to terms with her situation. She'd worked past her initial infantile way of thinking back to something more mature. But she still thought of Jim and Stacey as her Mommy and Daddy. Which they were now in a very real way.
Mikayla would need to find some way to communicate at some point, she knew. But right now, she enjoyed her time in Mommy's arms, Daddy cooing over her. And she certainly enjoyed the milk filling her tummy.
Before long, Mikayla needed her diaper change. Daddy took her away to change her. Mikayla got ready. Now was the perfect time to explain she remembered who she used to be.
