Divergent Paths

"You're just going to leave him?" Luke's accomplice that was not holding pressure on his leg grumbled at me.

Well if you guys hadn't tried to play caveman hunter...!! I screamed internally, but sighed to keep myself from giving any outward sign. After all, who knew how much medicine and effort would be wasted on Luke, especially in a situation where we had an extremely finite amount. Luckily, I had insisted our one medical doctor remain at the base camp so everyone would know where to go if there was an emergency. I also had the sense to mark our trail so we could find the way back easily.

"Look, if we try to move him through the brush he'll probably bleed to death," I said bluntly, ignoring the glares from Luke's friends. "The faster someone brings the doctor, the better, and you can also bring some people to take apart the boar, it would be a shame to just let it rot after all this. See if anyone has hunting or butchering experience."

"Yeah, I get that!" Luke's friend snapped at me. "But why are you saying we should split up? You want to keep going after this? Who knows what else is out there!"

"That's exactly why we shouldn't waste time and have a group continue to the hill," I explained, my aching body making me somewhat annoyed. "We spent so much time coming this far, and if we go back, we have to cover that distance again if we want to get a view of where we are without knowing what else we might stumble across. Since we've made it this far, we might as well go the rest of the way."

Although openly pissed, Luke's buddies ended up following my suggestion, with the talkative one running back to camp while the other friend and three other passengers opted to stay with Luke until help came. Meanwhile, Chris and the remainder of the group would trek with me to the hilltop.

"You sure you're okay?" Chris came up beside me and asked softly, obviously noting how gingerly I was moving. However, there was no time to baby myself. I nodded as we moved towards the hilltop. Although I was still worried about the figure that rescued me, with the others around and still rather shaken, I didn't dare confide in Chris the truth about my narrow escape.

Whether luckily or unluckily, we managed to make it to the hill without further incident, perhaps because we were warier thanks to the prior problem. While we were able to gain a clearer understanding of the island's topography, the view made it clear we were on an island. Disheartened, we trudged back to the site of the accident, only to find Luke had already been treated and was being moved back to the base camp, while an old man was directing two other passengers on how to butcher the hog.

We returned to the camp with packets of meat to prep and cook, and waited for the other groups to return. Leah and the base camp group had proved rather productive, getting all sorts of things off the plane, even panels to be used as makeshift shelters. As the sun dropped towards the horizon, we realized...
