Josh thought about the magical wishing bone all day at work. His mind spun with questions and ideas. He was sorely tempted to claim sickness and leave work early to drive home just so he could use it again, without Danielle knowing. Josh muddled through work, barely paying attention, before racing out the door at 5pm exactly. He drove home like a man possessed and made his way up the driveway, noting Danielle had beat him home. Rushing to the bedroom, he found Danielle waiting for him. Clearly she had been thinking of the bone too, she kept looking at the drawer, but made no move to take it out. Josh walked over and opened the drawer tentatively. The bone was still inside. Josh breathed a sigh of relief.
Josh picked the bone up, feeling its weight in his hand. "What do we do now?" He asked his wife.
"Why don't we start with something small. Something we can both see." She replied. Her eyes suddenly widened. "Not me! Ummm... I mean maybe try changing yourself first."
Josh thought for a second. Something small, but obvious. Walking over to the full length mirror in their bedroom he said "I wish I had blond hair." Nothing. No heat. No change. Josh tried several more times. Nothing. Danielle asked if she could try. Josh somewhat reluctantly passed it over to her. She tried the same wish on herself, but again nothing.
"Do you think its out of juice or something?" she asked.
"I don't know" he replied, taking the bone back and peering at it closely. Nothing seemed different.
"You don't think... maybe, we just imagined it?" Danielle asked hesitantly.
Josh frowned. "Both of us? At the same time?" Danielle pondered that. It seemed unlikely, but then again, so did her boobs suddenly growing as big as her head. Josh fought back disappointment at the bone's seeming lack of anything magical. Josh wondered if maybe his wife was right, and last night had used up whatever power this thing had. That sucked, Josh had really wished to know what his wife might look like with blond hair.
Josh gasped as the bone heated in his hand like it had last night. Danielle felt a tingle run across her scalp, and looked over at Josh to see his eyes widen in surprise. Grabbing a lock of her hair, Danielle saw her normally dark brown hair lightening to blond at the tips. Rushing over to the mirror, she watched as the golden blond color crept up her hair, swallowing up the brown until she was blond from roots to tips. Unzipping her pants, Danielle pulled her panties down from her crotch to see her neatly trimmed bush had turned a darker shade of blond than the hair on her head. Danielle turned to show Josh, who looked as surprised as she was. Josh wondered in his head why Danielle had noticed this change. Before he had had to speak his wish aloud before he noticed, but not this time.
Danielle had a sudden though. Running to her purse she grabber her driver's license. Her license listed her hair color as blond, and the picture had changed to match her new hair color. Running to the living room to grab their wedding photo, Danielle saw her blond self looking back at her in a white dress. Danielle rushed to show Josh. Apparently his wish hadn't just changed her present, but her past as well. Both Josh and Danielle were taken aback at the things power. Danielle wanted to another shot, and tried again while holding the wishing rock to change her hair color. Nothing. Thinking for a second, Danielle had an epiphany. Their wishes for themselves had failed, but Josh had wished for her and it had worked. Danielle silently wished her husbands receding hairline would fill in. Josh felt a prickle in his scalp and raised one hand to feel as his hairline marched back towards his forehead, growing until he had a full head of hair again. It worked!
Danielle explained what she'd surmised, that wishes on the holder didn't work, only wishes on others. Danielle guessed that changing something about yourself would require finding someone you trusted absolutely before handing them that kind of power over you.
