Jeff set the laptop containing Anya down in the living room, and unplugged an HDMI cable that went another device to the TV, and plugged it into the laptop. He turned on the TV, and after a moment saw Anya's avatar on both the laptop and the TV. In the laptop display settings he turned off mirroring and kept Anya's avatar on the laptop screen, and maximized the movie window on the TV.
"Ready to go?" Anya asked.
"Give me a couple minutes, please. I'm going to make a bowl of popcorn."
"OK," she said, hiding her disappointment. She didn't feel hungry, but felt a bit sad anyhow, because it would be nice to have popcorn and a soda with a movie. She heard the sound of popcorn popping. Inside the laptop, she couldn't tell where outside sounds were coming from, but obviously that was from the kitchen.
After a couple of minutes, Jeff returned with a big bowl of buttered popcorn, and a glass of soda. Anya's avatar looked down, trying to hide her sadness, and asked, "Shall I start the movie?"
"Just give me a moment to get settled," Jeff said. He sat down in the recliner, and set the bowl and the soda on the coffee table.
Anya felt something change in her environment, inside the computer, and looked around, There was now a bowl of popcorn and a soda in the virtual room with her. "Wow, thank you, Jeff! How d8d you do that?"
"I had no idea whether you might be hungry or thirsty," Jeff said, "but just in case, I set the Chronivac to digitize a duplicate of my popcorn and soda for you."
"I'm not hungry or thirsty," said Anya. "I don't think I even can be hungry or thirsty now, in the human way. But I still felt like it would be nice to have a snack and a beverage. Thank you for being so thoughtful."
"You're welcome!" Jeff said, unaccustomed to Anya expressing gratitude for anything. "If you're tired of standing, I also had the Chronivac change your program to allow you to conjure up a comfortable chair, or whatever other furnishings you might like."
"Wow," said Anya, as a recliner appeared on screen. Her avatar sat down, and reclined the chair. "I wasn't tired of standing, but this feels nice. Thanks again!"
"De nada. You did it yourself!"
"Yes, but you made it possible," Anya said. "Shall we start the movie?"
"Go for it!"
They watched the movie, which they both enjoyed. They had never watched a movie together before, and Jeff previously had no idea that they even had any common tastes in such things. "That wa actually pretty fun," Anya said. "Want to watch another movie?"
"That sounds good," he said, "but I'm pretty tired. If you don't mind, I'm going to go to bed, but we can certainly watch another movie tomorrow." He unplugged the HDMI cable, and carried the laptop upstairs. "Would you prefer to be left powered on, or be turned off for the night?"
"Please leave me powered on," Anya said. "I think I'll keep myself entertained."
"OK," said Jeff. "If you get bored, maybe you can power down on your own, or you can yell to wake me up. Oh, do you want me to put you in your bedroom?"
"That would be nice, thank you."
Jeff grabbed the laptop charger, and took it and the laptop into Anya's room. He set the laptop down, and plugged it in. "Is there anything else you'd like before I go?" he asked.
"No, but thanks for asking. Goodnight!" Anya replied.
Jeff left Anya's room, closing the door, and then closed the door of his own room, and lay down. It was amazing how nice Anya was being, he thought, and all it had taken to make it happen was her getting trapped in a computer. He was a bit sorry that he'd have to changer her back; once he'd done that, she wouldn't have any reason to be nice to him. Things would go back to normal. Oh well, he thought. You can't have everthing.
