The bus suddenly lurched as the driver hit a pothole, and James stumbled and almost fell into the seat between the twins. They grinned up at him, showing matching gap-toothed smiles. "Hi!" The one on the right beamed. "I'm Timmy. This is Bobby." He indicated the identical boy on Jame's left. "You look like a Jimmy." James blinked and then grinned. "I guess you are right. My real name is James, but you can call me Jimmy." He twisted a bit and got properly seated. "My car broke down."
Bobby giggled. "You're too little to have a car. I bet you still ride a tricycle!" Timmy huffed. "He's at least as old as us, and we have regular bikes." Bobby grinned. "With training wheels." "Yeah, but they aren't tricycles."
James grinned as the twins argued, though a little bewildered that he would be the topic. He was obviously not riding a bicycle of any kind. And he was way older. Though that made him frown. How much older was he? A grownup, right? Except he was on a school bus with first-graders. That was wrong. He was on a school bus. James ran his fingers through his mop of curly black hair, feeling confused. What was he doing on a school bus? He shifted in his seat, feet no longer touching the floor. Why didn't they make seats smaller for kids? But he wasn't a kid! Startled, James looked down at his feet, which were swinging a few inches above the floor of the bus.
"Did your laces come untied?" Bobby peered down, swinging his identical green sneakers. "They look OK to me." James stared at the other boy's shoes, then at the matching pairs on his and Timmy's feet. Timmy shrugged. "Mama does 'em up in a double-knot so's they can't come loose!" James straightened and found that he was eye-to-eye with both boys. And he was wearing a matching green t-shirt, just like them.
"I'm like you!" James' outburst got a roll of the eyes from Bobby. "Duh! Triplets, remember? Even Mama can't tell us apart."
