Most boys grew out of the desire to interact meaningfully with females. They learned at a young age that females weren't good for much. But every now and then, a boy would want something more. Those boys typically decided to forego women entirely and live in an all-male community. It was easier than seeing females and wanting them to be capable of something they just weren't.
Tommy Thomson was one of those boys. He was the very first child Sophia ever produced, at the age of fourteen. He was now sixteen and making plans to go to the closest male commune. Jack supported him, though wished he would stay to help with the business. But before he left, Tommy decided to say goodbye to his mother.
As Tommy entered the daycare, he winced at the sight of the women lined up in the back. A worker was tending to his only sister, Jane. Soon Jack would be looking for a husband for her, though she wouldn't be handed off for a few years. In the process of averting his eyes from the females, Tommy's gaze landed on the phone underneath the cabinet. He walked over and picked it up. There was an app open, with a sentence on the screen.
"Tommy is saying goodbye to his mother, who can't say it back." Tommy sighed. He tapped the word "can't" and changed it to "can" wistfully.
Suddenly, Sophia's eyes lit up with intelligence. She moved at a normal speed. Tommy hurried over to her. Her bare stomach was bulging from her latest pregnancy, his next sibling.
"Bye, Mom," he said carefully. Sophia smiled at him. She reached up an arm to stroke his face.
"Bye," she whispered. Tommy's eyes filled with tears. The phone fell from his hands as he embraced her. After a few moments, he broke off the hug, wiped his face, and left.
Sophia sighed in relief at the sight of the phone within reach. She wasn't sure why she hadn't been able to grab it before. After all, she was what was called a "fast female". She had above average intelligence for a female, though still slower than a male. Females like her were rare and not typically desired as wives, since they could "act up" in ways other females couldn't.
But that didn't matter. Sophia managed to grab the phone. She pulled up the app, only to run into a problem.
