Ever since she met Ty, Lisa had struggled a bit to stay focused on her classes, but usually the thought that she'd be with him in only a few hours helped her concentrate. But now, having to wait a week! It took her considerable effort to pay any attention in class. Her teachers knew that they could reliably call on her to answer questions, when other students couldn't, but today when she was called on, she stumbled with the answers, and it was obvious to everyone that her mind was elsewhere.
Finally, after her morning classes were over, it was lunchtime. Normally she'd sit with Ty, and sometimes Dustin, to eat lunch, but now, as she carried her tray, she saw him but wasn't allowed to join him. He said hi, and she nodded, as she passed, but because they were grounded, she wasn't allowed to do any more. She found a table elsewhere, to eat alone and sulk.
As she thought about what things she wanted to talk about with Ty, and what she wanted them to do, she came up with an idea. It would be against the spirit of the grounding, she knew, but not the letter. She was not allowed to see or talk to Ty, and she wouldn't.
This would take quick timing, which she'd never tried before. She'd have to duplicate herself, and transform the duplicate, at exactly the same time. As she carried her tray past him, she did it. She felt the change, but was it successful? She wasn't sure. But none of the students in the cafeteria took any notice of her. "I think I did it!" she thought. She wouldn't know for sure for a week.
Having (maybe) succeeded in her plan with Ty, she was tempted to do the same with other guys she passed in the cafeteria and halls. But since she wasn't absolutely certain it had worked, and she wasn't sure that she'd be able to contrive to pass by the same guys later, she regretfully decided that she'd only use her plan with Ty this week.
And now, rather than her little trick making it easier to concentrate in her afternoon classes, she discovered it was even harder. Now she had to wait a week to learn the outcome of this experiment, too!
