Shortly after Ty and Dustin got home from school, and Ty finished a homework assignment, he felt his phone vibrate. He pulled it from his pocket, hoping that it was Lisa texting, though he knew that wasn't allowed. To his surprise, it was his mother. "Are you home from school? Are you busy?" the text from June read.
"Yes, I'm home," he texted back, "and I'm not busy. Is something wrong?"
"No, nothing is wrong," June replied. "Would you mind coming to my office? You can teleport if you like."
This was rather disconcerting to Ty, but he replied, "OK. Be there in a moment." He pocketed the phone, and thought about June's office. He'd only been there a few times, so he wasn't completely certain that he had a good enough mental picture to teleport, but he gave it a try. Sure enough, he found himself in her office.
"Thank you for coming," June said. She stood, and went to her office door, which she locked.
"Am I in trouble?" Ty asked.
"Oh, no, not at all," June said. "Everything is fine. Nothing to worry about. But after I helped you with the Lisa app problem the first time, I said that I might like to try being an app to do some of my work, and then the situation yesterday brought that to mind again. If you don't mind, I'd like to try it now."
Ty was surprised. True, June had previously said she'd like to try it, but Ty hadn't been convinced that she'd actually decide to follow through. "Are you certain?"
"Yes, I definitely want to try it," June said.
"OK," Ty said. "I don't anticipate any problems, but the first time with Lisa, when there was a problem, I needed your help to solve it. If something were to go wrong with you as an app, who could I turn to for help?"
June could see that Ty was very concerned. "Ty, after that first incident, you and Lisa did a good job of careful planning, to avoid further problems. I'm sure that with the benefit of experience, you'll transform me with no problems at all. But in the unlikely event that there's a problem, you can ask your father to help."
"Dad? Does he know we're doing this?"
"No, but he's very smart. He might be quick to temper, but if you need someone to help think of a solution to a problem, he's at least as good at that as I am."
"OK," said Ty, still a bit dubiously. "You're sure you want to transform into a phone app? Right now?"
"Yes," said June. "I wrote down my phone lock code, in case you need it." She handed a slip of paper to Ty, and her cell phone. "I have a backlog of accounting work, in files that are accessible from the phone. I want to do some or all of that work, but I don't want to spend more than an hour as an app before you turn me back. And I'd like you to stay here and keep an eye on me, in case there's any problem. I don't think there will be, but I'm a bit nervous."
"OK, mom," Ty said. "That's what we'll do. And I wouldn't leave you alone in there. I'm nervous, too. And I have your consent to transform you back? Even if, as an app, you say otherwise?"
"Yes, Ty. You have my permanent consent to transform me into my normal human form, even if I, in another form, tell you otherwise."
Ty wiped some sweat from his brow, and transformed June into a mobile assistant app, on her phone, as he'd done before to Lisa. June disappeared, and there was a beep from her phone. There was a notification showing, "June Assistant App installed." He cleared the notification, and saw a June Assistant icon. She looked quite professional, in her business suit. He clicked the icon, and the app opened.
"How can I help you?" June App asked. Ty involuntarily shuddered, still having bad memories of when Lisa was an app the first time, and told him not to transform her. Those were the same words Lisa App always said.
