June sat at her desk. She picked up her phone, in wonder. "I was inside there... as only an app..."
"Yes," said Ty. "How much work did you get done?"
"At least a week's work," June said, "though I'll have to check some of it. It's hard to believe that this is real. Say, what was up with the questions about copper? And why did you ask me not to answer my phone?"
"The first question about copper was just to make sure that the transformation was working as it was supposed to," Ty explained. "It was to make sure that you could get information from the internet, and that you would... enjoy... answering questions. The second question about copper was because I had accidentally made you very unhappy by asking you to transform yourself. I didn't want to transform you back while you were very unhappy, so I had to quickly come up with a task you could succeed at."
June said, "Answering the second question about copper certainly did make me feel a lot better. Failing to complete a command as an app makes me feel terrible."
"I'm sorry about that," Ty said. "I found that out with Lisa, the first time, and I didn't intend to do it to you."
"That's OK," said June. "I know you didn't mean to make me unhappy. But what about the phone call?"
"Oh, that," said Ty. "When you're in app form, you have very little free will, and and will do anything you are told to do. That's not a good state in which to deal with phone calls, texts, or emails. Actually, I need to talk with Lisa about this too. If I call or text you when you're in app form, it's probably an emergency, and you should probably answer. I won't make you do anything bad in app form. But you probably shouldn't deal with calls, texts, or emails from anyone else. Even people you would normally trust, like Dad or Dustin, because they don't know what your app form is like, and might unintentionally cause problems."
"OK, I understand," said June. "But what if it's something important?"
"I'd suggest that you transform back, wait a few minutes, because the mental effects of the transformation linger a bit, and then call back."
"And how will I transform back?" June asked.
"Right," said Ty. "I need to give you that ability, like I have given Lisa. It's probably for the best that we didn't try that this first time. But now I'm going to give you the ability to undo and redo any transformation I've done to you, with a limitation that you can't oppose my transforming you back to human, if you're in some other form."
"Thank you," June said. "How do I do it?"
"Just concentrate on the form you want to transform into," Ty said.
June disappeared, and there was a beep from her phone. Ty picked it up, cleared the "June App installed" notification, and opened the app.
"How can I help you?" June App said.
"June, please transform yourself back to your human form," Ty said.
The app disappeared, with another beep and notification, and June was sitting in her chair again.
"Wow! I did that myself?" she asked.
"Yes," Ty said. "But before you transform yourself to app form again, try to think about what tasks you want to accomplish as an app, and that the last of those tasks should be transforming yourself back to human. That way your app form won't just be waiting for someone to give you a command."
"OK, that makes sense," June said. "This time, I'll send my accounting reports to the printer, then transform back."
June disappeared, and her phone beeped. Ty heard her printer start up. The phone beeped again, and June was sitting at her desk again.
"Excellent! I can control the transformation safely!" June said.
"Yes, great work!" Ty acknowleged. "But just to be certain, I suggest that for the next time or two, you let me know beforehand that you're going to do it, how long you expect to be an app, and tell me when you've changed back. That way, if I don't hear back from you in time, I'll know that there's a problem, and help you solve it."
June stood up, and walked over to Ty. "Thank you, Ty! This is amazing!" she said, and kissed him on the cheek.
Ty turned red. "Sure, mom! Glad to help!"
