Ty's Power

Reassembling June

added by prevert Yesterday O

Ty found himself back on the JSF1 space station, orbiting Jupiter, that he'd previously created to house, power, and cool the supercomputer he'd previously needed to reassemble Lisa. Déjà vu, he said. He set down the laundry basket containing june's clothing, then opened the main power control panel, and powered the computer up, along with all its related subsystems. He hadn't known whether the computer would ever be useful to him again, and certainly hadn't expected to need it again for a similar problem so soon.

He sat at the console and turned the LCD monitor on, to be greeted by some scrolling power-up log messages, and then the "LisaRescueOS 1.0" banner, and a command prompt. Perhaps he should gave chosen a more generic name for the operating system. He plugged in the SSD, copied the files over, then disconnected the SSD and teleported it back to his desk drawer for safekeeping.

Here goes, he thought, as he launched the puzzle solver program. Once it started, he used the File/Open menu to open the "june-dryer-pieces" file, and then again for "june-washer-pieces". He clicked the "start" button, and a countdown timer appeared. He'd been worried that the required time might be enormous, even with a supercomputer a hundred billion times more powerful than any on Earth. Reassembling Lisa had taken it less than 20 minutes, but since this was a different problem, he had feared tht it might take years, or eons. He was, therefore, greatly relieved that the computer showed "Estimated time to completion: 8 minutes".

Ty moved to a sofa facing the window, to look out at space, while the computer worked on assembling June. I really lucked out, Ty thought, with having this supercomputer facility already at my disposal, and the puzzle solver program apparently being able to handle this fractal problem, and that it could do it quite quickly. He sighed. While he was relieved, he was also unhappy that he'd again gotten into a situation requiring such extreme means for supolution.

As he watched out the window, he saw the radiating fins start glowing a dull red, and realized that the station was once again the second-brightest thing in the solar system, at least in infrared.

He found the view mesmerizing, but at one point he started to think that it had been a while. Was the computer done? He hadn't heard a beep, signifying either completion or an error, but he might have zoned out and missed it. He got up and looked at the monitor. Now it said, "Elapsed time: 12 minutes 37 seconds. Estimated time to completion: 3 minutes." So the problem was even harder than the computer thought, but apparently not by too much.

Ty sat down again, and resumed staring into space.
