Amy walked along the row of furniture beyond the chair and came to another one that looked like it belonged in a hair salon. The padded seat and backrest led up to a large shiny black hemmisphere that could have been a hair dryer. Another money receptacle box sat next to this chair.
Amy sat in it, put a quarter into it without reading the instructions, and said "Cat." She pulled the lever and saw the dark upside-down bowl drop over her head. A gush of hot air blew into her ears and sent her hair flying all over the confined space, falling over her eyes frequently. Then she felt clamp-like mechanisms press into both her ears and begin tugging. It hurt a little, but Amy forced herself to sit as still as possible. The machine pulled outward, then upward, and the blowing of wind became even louder.
Just as suddenly as it had begun, the air shut off, the clamps released, and the dome lifted. Amy immediately felt her ears.
First, they weren't quite where they should have been. She found them a bit higher on her head. Second, they were covered in fur and third, they were definitely shaped differently. The thin skin of each ear flicked and twisted as the fingers explored them. Amy sat up and looked around for a mirror. She found several floor-length beauty mirrors nearby and confirmed her hopes. She now had a perfect set of pointed gray cat ears. But what she hadn't expected was that her hair was different as well. Her normally black, shoulder-length hair was now accented by stripes of gray. It looked wilder, too, having been blown around by the machine. Furthermore, it looked like the strands had even grown several inches.
She ran a hand through the new gray and black stripes, shaking her head and admiring the thicker feel of her hair. Amy noticed too that the sounds of the shop were more distinct. She could hear the air flowing through an overhead duct, and the movement of someone many aisles away.
Her thoughts turned again to Lina, and Amy wondered if she should be getting back. It was starting to get late, after all, and she had homework to do.
