"So, what should we look at?" John asked.
Katie glanced around and noticed that the store was pretty empty - considering it was a grand opening. "Where do think all of the customers went?", she asked.
"I dunno. Maybe the prices are way up there... scared 'em all off", he remarked.
"Our prices are so low, you'll feel high on savings!", said a voice from behind them.
They both turned to see a rather tiny female salesclerk who had somehow snuck up upon them while they weren't paying much attention. She didn't quite look the part. Most workers in the mall at this time of year were students looking to gain some cash before the next school year. The ebullience coming from this 40'ish looking woman was refreshing in one sense, and quite creepy in another.
"Um.. thanks", remarked John. "We're just looking." He was trying to shoo her away in a polite fashion.
"Well.. you two lovebirds take all of the time you like. Or, if you like, take all of the time you love as birds", the salelady said.
John made a subtle cuckoo gesture toward Katie, who gave a small smile, and then elbowed him softly.
"Make sure that you peruse our animal costume section. We are having a sale today. Buy one, get a similar outfit for free. Or maybe you two would like to see our wide array of period wear... we carry the best selection this side of the state." She paused for a moment, seeming to examine the young couple in a odd way.
"Seeing as this is our grand opening. I would also like you two to consider today's special. We have a clothing designer who is taking special orders based upon your wildest fantasies. Who knows, maybe you will help him design the next trend. It does cost a tad more than what you would find in our stock, but believe me, it is worth every penny."
"Thank you, but we haven't a lot of money right now," Katie began, "we are saving for a special vacation together, and things get pretty expensive. You know how it is."
"Oh yes I do." said the lady, smiling back at her. "If you don't mind me saying, you two really seem to be in love with each other. We do have a special clothing section for... shall we say... intimate times."
Katie blushed, but John was getting a bit fed up by this point.
"I really appreciate your assistance, but we do not need help at the moment. We just.. kinda want to be alone to look around for ourselves", he said in a matter of fact tone.
"Sure thing", she replied. "You take all of the time that you like. I will be around. Just call me if you need help. My name is Esme."
John nodded and walked away, holding onto Katie's hand promting her to come with him.
"Geeze", he said in an exasperated breath. "Now I know why there aren't many people here."
Katie hugged him lightly. "Oh come on", she said. "Let's not ruin our fun. Where do you want to start?"
