"My name isn't really Janine." she whispered.
"Huh?" responded Matt. Janine was one of Susan's oldest friends, but Matt didn't have the slightest clue what she was talking about.
"Do you know what a Chronivac is?" Janine asked.
Alarm bells were going off in Matt's head. "I've heard of them." he responded warily.
Janine turned away, then turned back with her eyes lowered.
"Susan had a friend, a gay man named John. John had a problem in that he was really attracted to straight guys. One day John got a Chronivac in the mail. He was fooling around with it, and he discovered that it had an awareness setting--if you pressed it, the world would be unaware that there had been a change--everyone would think that's the way things always had been. John decided to that the way to live out one of his fantasies about being with a straight guy was to try being a straight woman. He set the awareness button so that everyone, even John's oldest friend Susan, thought Janine had always been Janine. But you're a nice guy Matt, and I don't want to get you into bed under false pretenses. So do you want to be with me? Cause I want to be with you."
Matt was desperately trying to come up with memories of Susan's gay friend John and drawing a complete blank. The Chronivac must be even more powerful than he had thought.
Matt looked down at Janine's adorable, hope-filled face.
