"I'm going to count to three, and then I press a button" said Carrie.
Todd pleaded, "Please, don't do it, Carrie."
"One..."
She held the remote threateningly above him.
"Two..."
"Carrie, don't!" he pleaded again, his eyes focused on the remote like he was staring down the barrel of a gun.
"Three..."
"Wait, wait!" said Todd. "I'll explain it to you. Alright? I’ll tell you everything."
She looked at him and smiled. "Okay, lets get started. What does this button do?"
He started to explain that button, then the next one and the next one, until she knew what every button on the remote did. He gave her a brief description of the scientific principles on which the remote functioned. He told her about his early animal experiments and his choice to seek human test subjects in the library. He even told her where he built it and how to find new parts for it.
“Is that all?” she asked.
“Yes, that’s all there is to know about it,” said Todd, defeated.
“Good,” she said. “Now, what shall I try first?”
“Wait,” said Todd, but he knew it was too late to stop her.
