Human beings are incredibly courageous when faced with their own morality and survival in bizarre circumstances, and Mary was no exception. She took a deep breath, not giving any thought to the fact she had inadvertently created a monstrously sized insect and was herself two feet tall, and crawled out from the other side of the couch and got to her feet as quickly as she could.
She hugged the wall behind her and peered out from behind the arm of the couch. The mosquito, now four feet long and able to stand six feet tall on its long spindly legs, was incredibly powerful with its many sensory apparatus designed to help it navigate and survive in a giant world. Its sensitive antennae on either side of the terrifyingly sharp proboscis easily picked up the scent of Mary’s fresh blood and its 360-degree field of view saw her with incredible sharpness in thermal vision. Every vibration and movement was observed.
Mary barely had time to get out of the way before the giant and iron strong proboscis launched itself at her body with such force it left a dent in the wall behind her and scratched away paint. Mary screamed again and dived behind the center of the couch.
The mosquito launched into the air with lightning quick precision and perched on the top of the couch, staring down at the terrified Mary. It stabbed its mouth down at her through the gap against the wall and she was ready this time Mary wasn’t about to go without a fight. She grabbed the strong beak and grappled with it ferociously, kicking and hitting it and trying to force the mosquito away from her. The tip dripped saliva and Mary lost her grip on it, but it had been more than enough. As the mosquito suddenly flipped backwards from losing balance it fell on it’s back and hit the floor with a thud.
The giant creature flapped its wings and righted itself, but the critical seconds Mary needed to make a dash for the kitchen had been put to good use. By the time she had darted out from behind the arm of the couch she was already halfway across the living room before the giant insect returned to its feet, pumping her tiny legs as fast as they would take her. She just about lost her footing as she slammed into the wall on the opposite end of the room just as the mosquito did the same. The insect crumbled into a heap as its head smacked into the drywall behind Mary and laid in a daze.
Mary didn’t look back even for one second and ran for the knives on the wall of the kitchen. She was damn well going to defend herself against that horror. She was still too short to grab one of the blades off the hook but that was changing fast. She was gaining inches very steadily. As the mosquito rose to its legs wobbly and shook itself off Mary leaped for the largest knife on the wall and grabbed the tip of it in her hand. As she fell back to the linoleum she grabbed the knife with her and pulled it down.
Mary and the blade hit the floor and the shrunken woman resumed her mad run for the staircase. The Mosquito cut off her escape and twitched angrily, standing right in front of her and the stairs as it landed from across the room.
Mary wielded the knife in front of her, which was more like a broadsword in her current state, and took one good swing at the mosquito. To her horror, the sharp blade only bounced off the creature’s hardened exoskeleton, barely scathing it, but the force of the blow again knocked the creature over. Mary dropped the knife and made for the stairs, bounding up the sixteen steps with incredible speed and dexterity despite her size of two and a half feet, and in seconds she had climbed to the top.
The mosquito, having enlarged again, was quite a bit more cumbersome at five feet long and had much more difficulty ascending the stairs, too big to fly up and too clumsy to deal with the unfamiliar obstacle. By the time the mosquito made it to the upstairs hallway Mary was halfway down the hall and just a couple feet from the doorway. With the higher ceiling and farther apart walls the mosquito could once again fly.
Mary looked behind her as she heard the ominous and frighteningly louder hum of the insect’s wings and the whoosh of air as wings touched the walls and flapped with great speed. Mary threw herself at the bathroom door and hurried into the room just as the insect would have pounced on her. She frantically tried to push the door closed only to meet with the resistance of the mosquito pressing it’s weight on the door as it nosed itself towards her.
With one final shove Mary slammed the door against the monster with all her force and it was enough to make the creature whimper as the hardwood crashed into its body. The mosquito flailed backwards and fell to the ground in shock. Mary slammed the door and made sure it was pressed shut.
She stood with her back against the door weeping, grabbing her bleeding arm, and slowly fell to the floor crying.
