“Let’s go down the middle,” Marie points as they step deeper into the funhouse. The loud donkey bray went off again, but this one didn’t have the static of the bad speakers of the outside, and it sounded closer.
They come to a hallway filled with mirrors of different bulges that reflect off other ones forming a maze. They reach and feel their way through the glass, occasionally running into other boys and girls trapped inside. Josh ran into one boy that was quite tall, but he noticed something odd about him. The boy had a grizzly face, like he badly needed a shave, but the hair on his face didn’t match the light hair on his head. Josh moved out of the way and let the boy pass and looked down at his feet. They were dirty, just like everyone’s was, but he was walking on his tiptoes.
Josh looked over at Marie and saw that she too was walking on her tiptoes, like she was sneaking. That feeling of dread came over him again for a moment, until Marie called him, “Josh, this way.” Josh looked over and saw Marie gesturing in a direction. He tried to walk toward her, but hit a mirror instead. “No, this way, silly,” she laughed. Josh felt his way along the glass to Marie and they entered another part of the fun house. It was a series of monkey bars over pools over water that boys and girls were swinging across to the other side. A boy falls into one of the pools and then a few of the girls. They laugh, drenched as they climb out to try again. “After you,” Josh bows to Marie. Marie grabs hold of the bars and makes her way across. The monkey bars are only connected at one end leaving the other end open. Marie swings from one to the other and then grabs one, but it’s on a hinge. She screams and falls into the water. She comes out of the water, soaked, her shirt sticking to her figure and displaying her lack of a bra to everyone around. The boys all whistle as Marie sticks out her tongue and wades back to the start.
