Carrie offered John one of the costumes. All he could see was a mass of light blue fur. Soft thick fur. John took it in both hands and held it out, letting it unravel and reveal itself. The first thing John saw were two very large and long ears. The second thing he saw was a puff-ball tail of purple. It was a bunny.
John blushed redder than the time his pants had fallen down during Prom. He had agreed to this trip to Toonworld, but he had had reservations about it. It just went against his personality. And this, this BUNNY costume was more than he could handle.
"Carrie, umm...it looks great...but...uh..." John stammered.
Carrie was still bouncing on the balls of her feet, eager to experience something so fun, so cartoony, so unhuman. Carrie held up her costume, it was gray with large round ears and a long pink tail. "Look how cute this one is too! Won't this be fun? We'll be the cutest tourists around here!" To which John blushed even more, a deep true red that never could have been possible anywhere else.
Finally noticing John's reluctance, Carrie stopped short, frowning and getting that look she did when she was about to cry. Slowly, clouds started to form above her head and turned dark, threatening rain. "John...we came here to really have a good time and get closer...but if you won't even wear this costume..." A tear of large proportion started to form in the corner of Carrie's eyes.
John rubbed the back of his head, letting his other arm fall, still clutching the costume. "Well...I...", John started, "I do want to get closer to you, but I, I'm just having a hard time letting go. I can't do it as easily as you."
The clouds above Carrie's head loosened up, but didn't leave quite yet. "Tell ya what," John offered, "let's go to the hotel, and I'll put this on." John raised the costume. "I'll get used to it, and then well..." John looked up, with a half-smile. "I'll get used to this, trust me. It's just harder than I thought it was going to be."
Carrie looked at John for a couple of minutes, making John nervous. A smile crept up to her face and the clouds dissipated fully. "OK. We'll take this slow, for your sake. We'll go get checked in and dressed up, then have some fun." Carrie's exuberance had almost completely returned. She quickly turned on her heels to head out of the store, with John and cute costumes in tow.
"Thanks! We'll be sure to use these costumes and have a blast!" Carrie said as the couple left the store and passed the owner. He grinned widely and nodded, giving Carrie a wink and whispered. "Don't worry lass, once he puts that suit on, he won't want to be anything than a bouncy bunny." Carrie stared and the owner then took a quick glance at John, but he hadn't heard, he was steeling himself to put such a silly costume on. Carrie nodded and giggled, thanking the owner again.
John and Carrie walked a few blocks down the street, stopping several times to ask how to get to the hotel. John was becoming more relaxed, letting the magic of the toons work on him. He was getting more accepting of such playfulness and oddness.
