Running.

added 16 years ago O

Catching your breath as quickly as possible, you barely hesitate to search for some exit from this room. It doesn't take you long to spot one: a closed window on the opposite wall.

You almost want to rest for a bit before attempting your escape, but the shiny black ooze has already begun to slowly seep beneath the door. You can see a puddle of it stretching across the room, seeking to fill it. Immediately, you dive for the window, pulling and prying with all your might. No luck. The puddle is halfway across the room now and still growing, inching closer and closer to you. You pull harder, look for any signs of a lock or seal on the window, but find nothing. The puddle has almost reached you, and you can hear the door of the room straining in its efforts to hold back the mass of the stuff. Finally, you take the only remaining alternative: grabbing whatever you can reach nearby (in this case, a very small table), you swing at the window as hard as you can, instantly shattering it and giving you your escape. Just as you do, the door also shatters, the black fluid flooding the room in an instant, and you barely manage to dive out the window and start running into the woods before it does.

As you run through the forest, dodging branches and underbrush and rocks and sticks, you can hear the blackness still pouring behind you. Glancing back, you see it weaving between trees effortlessly, now flooding not only a solitary hallway but an entire wood. Every step you take seems more futile in the face of this thing that never tires, never falters, never stops, and soon you've found that there's no point in continuing. You can keep fleeing and delay it, but you have already lost, and sooner or later it will catch you, submerge you, consume you.

And then a miraculous thing happens: it doesn't. You find yourself unable to run anymore and stop, and when you do you realize that it's no longer chasing you. In fact, it's nowhere to be seen, having apparently abandoned its prey some time ago. You almost leap in elation and glee at your successful evasion of that black thing, but manage to contain yourself when you realize that you're now lost in the middle of a forest filled with untold dangers.
