John lazily stretched, the dusty bed covers tangled around his body and legs. Darkness filled the room, but a lightening darkness. A lump hidden by old fabric indicated Carrie, John's wife. Mind still trying to shake off it's covering of cotton and spider webs John was briefly confused as to where he was. As it always does, the previous day flooded back to him.
John and Carrie had stopped at a costume shop and had gotten pumpkin costumes. Something he found rather funny in this moment of rational clarity. Then they'd gone to Halloween Town and...and GREW into pumpkins. From there, he could not remember anything. He was fairly sure they'd roamed the town, but he wasn't sure. The most troubling thing was the question of how they'd ended back up in their hotel room. John ran a hand over himself, feeling a rather human body under the sheets. Why were they humans again? Did the costumes wear off after a bit? Or had something happened last night? If only he could remember. John combed a hand through bed-messed hair.
He needed some air. Quietly, so as not to disturb Carrie, John untangled himself from the bed and stood up next to the bed. He felt a chill and realized he was naked. A courtesy bathrobe was hung conveniently on one bed post. He put it on, warming up. John started to tiptoe to the balcony, which turned out to be no easy feat. He tried to tiptoe softly, but the more quietly he tried, the louder the floor squeaked. Thankfully Carrie was not a light sleeper. John opened the balcony door and went outside into the morning pre-dawn.
He could see Halloween Town, or at least a good amount of it. Bit of the village faded into morning fog or dark forest. Crooked lanes with decrepit building winded all around the hotel. Huge pines loomed on all sides a few miles away. Mountain crags rose up higher further out with various precariously perched castles.
The morning air felt wonderful and helped clear his head. He still couldn't remember what they'd done as pumpkins. Certainly it would come to him in time. John stretched again, feeling ready to tackle a full day of honeymooning.
