Walking in Circles

added 15 years ago A BM O

You decide to follow the oversized human tracks. They lead you up a rocky trail, sometimes getting close to disappearing, but then wind back down around the hill. It keeps getting hotter, and you pull off your shirt, which is already drenched in sweat. As you continue walking, you see some new tracks ahead. More dinosaur tracks! You stop and stare at the human tracks that you have been following - although the junction looks familiar, the tracks have changed. The toes look longer, and the way the marks show up in the ground is different. Curious, you keep following the trail up another long hill. Your feet are killing you now, and your pants and underpants are chaffing from the sweat. You pull your pants off to air things out, absently noting that you dropped your shirt somewhere back along the path. No point in going back for it now. You carry your pants, hoping you don't meet anyone. Still, it's not really any different than wearing a bathing suit. Up the hill, and as you reach the top, one of your shoes rips open! Dammit! You hobble along a little, then find that it's way easier to walk barefoot. Down again, and you come to another place where dinosaur tracks meet the trail you are following. There is something familiar a little further on. Your shirt! You stare at the soggy fabric, confused. Have you been walking in circles? But the path looks different - the footprints are more apelike than human. As you look ahead, the path looks familiar, but you know the tracks weren't like this. And your tracks aren;t there either. You realize you have dropped your pants and shoes somewhere. The sweat-soaked underpants are really irritating you now, and you pulled them off, determined to hang onto them in case you meet someone on the trail. Then you make your way up a hill once more. The hiking seems easier - maybe you are getting your second wind? You also find it's faster to work up the slope using your hands to help pull and grab on the ground. Down again, and you feel terrific, full of energy. You grab at trees and swing over sections of ground, losing your underpants and not really caring. There's another trail ahead... with a soggy shirt that smells strongly of you. You poke at it and grunt, dimly remembering that you have been here before. Looking down, you see your shaggy, thickly muscled body, the ape-like feet that are tough and filthy from never having worn shoes. HUH!? Your mind suddenly clears, and you scramble over to a small pool of water to gape at your reflection. The creature staring back at you is not even a Neanderthal, more like an even more primitive ancestor. Yet as you stare at yourself, you are having trouble remembering why that is wrong. The tracks. You were following tracks in the ground. They now have firm indentations of knuckles, where the creature moved on all fours. But you can smell other creatures in another direction, and thre are the dinosaur tracks as well. You decide to:
