The Zoo

Why You Should Follow Rules Even if the Grammar's Awkward

added 15 years ago O

At first glance of the rules, you barely notice the mistake, but suddenly it comes to you in rule 2:

"Don't Entering the Animal Pens."

"What?" you mutter to yourself. That doesn't even make sense to you. You know it's a mistake, but it just glares in your mind as you read it...

"Don't Entering the Animal Pens..."

As you enter the zoo, you find yourself repeating the phrase silently. You hand the Ticket Taker your free zoo ticket and slyly say to him, "You know your sign has a mistake in it..."

He stares blankly at you, uninterested in what you have to say, as if he's heard it before at least ten thousand times. You chuckle to yourself, then there is an awkward pause between the two of you.

You slowly walk into the zoo, looking back at the ticket taker. He's still watching you as you enter. Maybe it was just your imagination. Maybe there was no mistake, and you were just making yourself out to be a jerk. Then, you turn to one of the nearby signs, reiterating the rules:

"Don't Entering the Animal Pens."

It was there like a sore thumb... again. In fact, every sign with the rules on them said the exact same thing. These weren't copies of the sign either. Each sign was in its own font, its own background color, some of them were printed, one was engraved in wood. You were beginning to lose your mind over it.

"Does anybody know how to speak English in this zoo?!" You scream to one of the snack vendors. He stares back at you as if its your fault. A nearby mother and child look at you strangely too.

You were beginning to become irritated with the rule. You could have just let it go, but now that the entire zoo is somehow against you, you're more than eager to get back at them.

You start to search each cage for an opening, trying to find an unlocked door or a broken bar somewhere. Since the rule wasn't even logical the way it was written, you technically couldn't be breaking it.

As you were frantically starting to climb the bars of a nearby monkey cage, you noticed something. People were ignoring you now. There was a nearby employee facing you, and he didn't even try to stop you. Even the cameras wouldn't turn to face you. You decided to put that to your advantage, as you suddenly noticed a wide open door. Without thinking, you dashed straight for it, not caring that it led to...
