Jared stared at the man for a long time, trying to get her thoughts together. She had too much going on in her brain to get it all right. For the moment, all she knew is that she had been a doe, and before that had been a teenage boy.
And for now, this man James held the Amulet.
She decided quickly to play along, at least until she could decide what she wanted to do. "My name is Mary?" she asked haltingly.
James smiled, "Yes, it is. I hope you like it."
She just nodded and stood up, "It's okay," she said. "Are you a buck?" she asked.
If it was possible, his smile got even wider. "I am, I am a buck. I have a campsite near here. Why don't you come with me and we'll get you settled."
Jared didn't like the sound of that, but went with the man anyway. As long as he held onto the amulet, he was in control. She did feel bad about the young man that had transformed, but unless he came back on his own there was little she could do for him.
They walked though the woods for a few minutes until they came up to a small campsite on the top of a nearby hill. James had obviously camped here alone. He took out a T-shirt and shorts for Jared. "Here, you should put something on in case someone see's you. It's what humans do." He brushed a hand across her face, "In a little while, maybe I'll show you what else humans can do."
Jared shuddered. She didn't like what was happening. Strangly, she had no problem with this as a doe, but now, she was a human woman with no past. James could keep her literally locked up if he wanted and no one would know. As she slipped on his clothes, she saw him put the amulet in a pocket of his backpack.
For the moment, she didn't know if she wanted to try and be Jared again or even the doe again, but she had to get away from James first!
