"B-but what do I d-do now?" you stammer. You aren't sure what you expected, but it sure wasn't this.
Sofi shrugs. "Join the carnival, I guess. Or you could try yer hand at breaking the rest of the curses around here, but that'd probably just make Mom madder at ya. I'd say joining up's yer best bet. If you do a good job, they might even get you a legal identity again."
You brighten at the mention of that, but she shakes her head. "Not like that. Mom wouldn't give you yer old life back for anything, but she and Dad have strings they can pull to get you citizenship; they have to, or they wouldn't be allowed to employ you."
"But...but I can't live like this!" you wail.
Sofi shrugs. "Then ya probably shouldn't have tried to make a deal with Mom. 'Sides, you'll fit right in around here. Half of our freak show is people that got caught by one of the cursed attractions. And it's not like ya can go back to the way things were. You don't have any chance of getting yer life back, since you're not even the same species ya were before. This way, you'd at least get legal status. If ya head out on yer own, ya might just end up in some government lab or somethin'."
She's got a point. Who knows what might happen to you out in the real world? You're not going to have any access to your identity or (more importantly) your bank account, and as for getting by on your own, you're a twelve-year-old girl, albeit one with claws and fangs; if anybody tried to mug or kidnap you, you probably wouldn't stand a chance. "But," you sputter, "I don't want to be in a freak show!"
"So don't," she shrugs. "There's other stuff you can do around here. Fry the mini-donuts or something. As long as you're earning yer keep somehow, Dad won't mind. 'Sides, I don't think you'd be enough of an actor for the freak show anyway. Ya gotta play to the part there, and I betcha can't."
"But...but I don't want to share a trailer with Pops," you protest, "and you said..."
Sofi chuckles. "Nah, now that you're a girl you can bunk with one of the other ladies. I think Anna, the harpy, has a bed free."
You're hesitant; the last thing you feel like doing is joining up with the operation that just turned your life upside-down. But the other options seem to be worse - you're sure you couldn't make it on your own as a twelve-year-old cat-girl, and as for breaking the curses, you'd probably wind up pissing Sofi's mom off and winding up as something worse. But do you really want to sign on with this place?
