the city orphanage

added 15 years ago O

The police car pulls up at the city orphanage-- a cold, gray, stone block building in the heart of the city. Looking out of the police cruiser's window, you reflect that the structure looks like a cross between a prison and an insane asylum. In fact, rumors claimed the building had served as both at times in its past.

"Well, kid, it ain't much, but it sure beats sleeping on the streets," the young officer reassures you apologetically. Bending over, he ruffles your hair. "Besides, it should only be for a few days, tops. No one would want to get rid of a fine, young man like you!"

He grins, and you attempt to return the grin. It comes out closer to a grimace. There will be no missing persons report for you-- at least not for you as a skinny, red headed kid. You know you were a full grown adult before meeting Red, even if you can't recall what that person you were's name was, or where he lived.

The police officer takes you inside, and you meet a tired looking woman, probably near your former age, who listens as the young man explains how you were found in the park, and apparently can't recall your name and address. She casts a weary eye in your direction, and calls you over to a beat up, steel desk and takes out a stack of forms and begins asking questions. Questions you mostly have no answers for.

Finally she sighs, and sticks the paperwork into a folder. By this time the police officer is long gone and you can hardly keep your eyes open.

"We can pick this up tomorrow," she announces, glancing at the clock. It is almost midnight. "Meanwhile, we need to get you a place to sleep, and I have a lot of work to do on the computer."

With that, she takes you down a long, dimly lit hallway and up an ancient elevator to the fourth floor. The floor is what you vaguely recall is called a "dormitory". The woman shows you the communal bathroom and showers, and leads you down a long hallway whose floor is worn linoleum. Finally, she stops at a door and hands you a key.

"You get the bed on the right," she explains, leaning on the wall. "In the morning we can see about getting you some more clothes. Breakfast is at eight o'clock-- you shouldn't have any trouble finding the dining hall, just follow all the other kids, and/or the noise. We can go over the rest after breakfast."

With that, she lets you into the room, instructing you to go straight to bed. You do, although at first you doubt you can get to sleep, considering all that has happened to you in the last dozen or so hours. To your surprise, however, you fall asleep and the next thing you know the sun is high in the sky, and your roommate is already up and out of the room.

Dressing in your clothes from yesterday, you hurry to the bathroom and breakfast. After you finish eating and deliver your tray to the dish washing window, the same lady from last night-- a Ms. Simmons, looking every bit as tired as the night before, catches you and ushers you off to another round of questions, interviews, tests, and a blur of similar things, getting you signed into the orphanage.

At one point she apologizes to you.

"I am sorry, but there have been no missing persons reports for someone of your age and description," she explains, looking genuinely sorry. "We don't have much to go on, and we are trying to get reports from neighboring states at this point. We will let you know once something turns up."

In the end, they conclude that you are probably nine years old, and just finished third grade before school let out for summer. It makes you feel weird, knowing that, until sometime yesterday, you knew stuff from at least high school level, as well as how to drive a car and stuff you needed for working a day to day job. Now the best you can do is make guesses-- and you suspect that those guesses are no better than a kid your new age could normally make!

And they assign you a name-- Ryan Edwards Dean. It takes you a moment to realize that your new initials are R.E.D.-- red! Someone at the orphanage has a sense of humor!

After the first few days things settle down into pretty much of a routine. The orphanage keeps is residents busy with summer programs they are encouraged to take-- swimming lessons and other summer sports, field trips and other educational activities, and the like. Three meals a day on a strict schedule, a nightly curfew, work you can do-- both mandatory and for a weekly allowance, and other reminders that you are not an adult and not on your own. Clothes are mostly second hand from charities. All in all, about what you expected. Still, you have your free time on weekends and some afternoons when nothing else is scheduled.
