While at the local fair, Jake received an advertisement for a summer job. Although the man handing out the flyers seemed a bit odd, Jake’s parents had been on him about working over the summer if he wanted to have any money to enjoy it. There weren’t many details, just a location, a time, and the requirement of a two-day commitment. Jake knew his parents would never let him disappear for two days, so he managed to convince them he would be at a friends place for a few days.
After a short bus ride, Jake arrived at the location, a small pier down by the harbor. There were lots of young boys waiting with the flyers in their hands. They asked questions, but know one knew anything more about the job. Then a gentleman dressed all in red steps off the dock. “Good evening,” he said softly, “so many able bodies willing to work. Just step right this way.” The man gestured down the dock and several of the boys started walking.
A few boys tried to ask questions about the sort of work they’d be doing, but the man just smiled, “move along, it’s much easier to explain everything at once.” Jake followed the crowd down the pier to a large Ferry Boat and the crew of the boat welcomed them all aboard. The boys all loitered around various parts of the vessel until everyone was on board.
“Well, why don’t we talk about the jobs you’ll be doing,” the man started. He went on to explain that he was the owner of a small amusement park not far from here and that he wanted the boys to work the various games and concession stands. One boy leaned over to Jake, “this is kinda weird, right?” Jake nods, “my names Jake.” “Dean,” he said back, but they both stopped as the man in red seamed to be coming to an end. “So anyone who doesn’t seem interested, can feel free to leave now.”
