"Calm down? I don't want to calm down!" Marie shouts. "I hate this place and I want out, do you get that? I - want - out!" and again she slams her feet on the padded wall. "I - want..." she repeats, but her last kick goes far higher than she meant, and she tumbles to the ground with a small cry of pain. Then, sprawled on her side with her back to Josh, she's suddenly silent, her sides rising and falling with deep, heaving breaths.
Josh quickly moves towards her. "Hey, you all right? What happened?".
"I think I... hurt my hands..." she says, in an oddly empty voice.
Something in that voice makes Josh stop in his tracks. "Is it bad?"
"I don't know... I just... think...". With an awkward jerk of her shoulders, she rolls towards him. She's holding her forearms close to her face, studying them. Her eyes are wide in shock and her gaze shifts from them to Josh and back again. "...I hurt my hands," she says. "My hands," she repeats, her voice a void monotone.
She doesn't have any hands. Beyond her thumbs there are only oblong lumps of featureless skin and flesh. They're stretching - changing shape - under her eyes.
"Help?"
