I was nicely sleeping in bed when the phone rang.
"Morning Frank this is Sheriff Peterson!"
"Ahhh Frank it's four thirty in the morning, what's so important, I asked groggy as heck?"
"Have a strange death and I thought the county medical examiner should come in and give me a little advice, please, right now, begged the Sheriff!"
"OK but I'm on the clock now and this better something different!"
I hung up the phone and walked to the bathroom. Shaving I tried to open my eyes and windered what in the world Sheriff Peterson could have that needed my attention at this hour. A medical exam doctor I deal with death and never once has a client been a noshow for one of my appointments.
The drive had me wondering all the more, till it started a day of weird events as I drove into the sheriff office parking lot.
"Morning Frank, I really appreciate....."
"Never mind since I'm up and on the clock we best see what's so strange and important, I said as we walked into the exam room."
Sheriff Peterson was as white as the sheet covering the blank form on the exam table. I looked at my good friend of many years, a man who has looked evil, death, and most anything in the face without a shudder. Yet this morning he was scared as Hell!
"Frank I was driving the early shift this morning and was near the old mansion. I turned onto Phelp road and picking up speed this per..person ran out from the brush. I hit him at almost 50 and he flew up and landed like a ton of bricks on the trunk of the car."
I looked at him and turned to peel back the sheet. As I started to uncover what I expected would make me not want breakfast too soon, I stood and stared at the face.
Turning to look at Bob, the sheriff was still white as a sheet. I turned again to view the head I just uncovered as my eyes look a study of a very strange sight.
The face was of Kenneth Rooste our local insurance agency owner. His beard which was graying for the 53 year old man he was, is now a dark brown to black. His eyes which I'd seen just a month ago were blue are now a dark brown. I saw what the Sheriff was disturbed about because Ken had ears sticking out from the sides of the head which looked as a farm animal's. Doning my rubber gloves I took hold of an ear fully expexting it to pop off as a piece of makeup.
I looked closer and saw the ear was attached to the skull, "It's real!"
The forehead was covered in the curly and shaggy thick black hair. I ran my fingers thru it noticed it's very thick. Strange since Ken was almost bald a month ago. Then a knub was felt and I looked at the Sheriff. He was holding what appeared to be two curled white horns of a goat. "I found these along the road where I hit him, said the Sheriff in a shaky voice!"
Strange was the word for this situation as I turned again to the dead person on the table. The facial hair was like to that of the animal hair which grew all around the sides and top of the head. I moved the lips and noted their puffy look. As I went to examine the oral cavity I could not believe my eyes. The teeth were very animal like in form and arrangement. I then pulled the sheet away to see the entire body.
"OH SHIT BOB!"
I stepped two steps back to join Bob as we stood looking at what was nolonger our friendly local independant insurance agent. In fact he was quite less than human now!
I stepped up to the table again as Bob joined me. The dark brown hair ran down from the head and covered the entire back and buttocks. I noted the hair thinning as it moved closer around his upper chest. The hair quickly thickned as it covered the belly and what appeared to be a hairy animal sheath attached to the lower abdominal area.
Again the hair filled in the groin but had changed color to a light brown as it covered a huge pair of hair covered testicles. I balanced the orbs in my hands and looked at Bob. "Must be a pound each, I said with surprise!"
Thighs which were also covered in thick curly dark brown hair ran down to knees and a very animal like short leg. A hock and hind foot of what we agreed must have been a goat's had a large black cloven hoof attached.
As I moved the hips for a view of the tail hanging out from under the strange body one arm fell off the table side. I reached to lift it up and noticed it's hand. The hand was also covered in thin layer of dark brown hair and the fingernails were not human by any means of thought. Black, blunt ended they were almost square. The thumb had dwindled in size and looked almost as a dewclaw.
I turned to Bob, "Where, how, this is Ken Rooste but I never saw anything like this he's straight out of some myth!"
As I went to place the hand back on the table the fingers gripped my hand in a tight grip of death. The strength was like a steel vise and I pulled my arm back to break it's grip. Suddenly the chest moved and eyes blinked, as Ken sat up on the table, alive!
